Seemingly the judge told them to rely on the facts of the case as presented in court and no to do any of their own investigating.

Yup, that would be pretty standard I'd imagine. Person in question will be lucky if they don't find themselves in contempt of court. Very stupid thing to do, when specifically told not to.

No. Get a doctor's note to the effect that for their health it would be advisable to excuse them.
