Training Run Times

One of these strange mornings, set out 8am to do 8 miles, stomach was iffy early morning, got beyond mile 3 and had to stop for 3 minutes, decided to walk back to start, walked half mile and said id run again, the 3 miles back went a lot better,
Im finding lately i have more energy and drive on evening runs,

Jimmy, please refer to post number 1 above. Very above. Post 1, page 1.

I was a steward at the women's mini marathon yesterday - lead bike for the wheelchair race and then "sweeper" bike for the back of the running field. Great atmosphere and a fantastic "sport for all" vibe.

However, one thing that nobody seems to mention was that, despite the "You Go Girl / Sisters Are Doing it For Themselves / Girl Power" vibe that's constantly pushed about this event, there was not a single female volunteer doing any of the key stewarding or organising roles - all blokes.

Out on the course, there were around 20 stewards minding junctions - in fairness, four of these were female- but any of the significant roles were all male volunteers. All of the startline tasks, , chip management, timing, lead bikes, sweeper bikes, ambulances, motorbike gardai, bicycle gardai, finish line management, PA and definitely the setting up of the course, barriers, finish-line area early in the morning were 100% completed by men - even the DJ in the park afterwards was male. A few women helping out handing out medals or cups of tea and a few "media" beours on the PA beforehand - that was it.

Tough morning on sunday, 10 miles, 1st 4 were way too fast and started to flag badly, Ended up with a mix of walk/running for the rest of the run,
Finished just under 95 minutes, Longest run in 6 months,
Onto last night 5 mile session, 1ST Mile @ 8.40 pace, stepped it up then, Mile2 @7.44 pace, Mile 3 @ 8.00 pace, Legs were struggling by then
Mile 4 saw me walk for 20 seconds 8.57, Finished with mile 5 @ 8.26,

Lads, I have a bit of time on my hands today, so I'm thinking a "Where are you now" kinda post might be on. I'm going to say there's about 10 or 12 regular posters here, most have been running and posting for years and then we have Honky and Jimmy from about two years ago. It seems to me that a pile of the auld and auldish lads are struggling with injuries. I'm thinking Smurf, Terrier, Me, PR, Timeout and another couple, Marky, Elwood?? Anyway, it's a bit fooking depressing but I'm trying to make some sense of it and see what the future might hold. I'm 59 now, about 17 years running and I suppose my peak was about 6 years ago in terms of 10k and HM pbs. Marathon was a small bit later but it was always lagging behind the Half in any case. Once I started to slow a little, as I say, about 5 years ago the Half times went from 81 to 82, 83 mins. Last year, I got back to running and managed three HMs under 90 mins. I was fairly happy with that, though not entirely. I was really hoping to get back nearer 84.xx. Now, it seems that's not going to happen and I'd very happily settle for another sub 90mins. As for the 42.2k, I have no plans to tackle one anytime soon. The issues since about 2021 have been hip, knees and now hip/glute again. I've just started back with physio and I'm hopeful this will be sorted. I'd say it'll be next year though before I'm in any shape at all tbh. I'll be 60 then and you'd begin to wonder.... IF I get fit again, I'll be happy to stick with 10k and at a stretch Half marathon stuff. Times will be targeted if and when. What about the rest of ye? Crocked? Half-crocked? Coming back? On the treatment table? Share away, lads.
Long time getting around to this reply C., apologies.

I picked up a knee injury in May, mashed the s***e out of it by running the Cork HM with my eldest lad in June and therewith entered into the usual injury horror cycle. I got the MRI in mid-June which showed nothing savage beyond a little bit of wear and tear on the cartilage that was normal for my age. However, three months of rest and focused gym rehab have not delivered recovery - the joint is still sore and causing fierce stiffness in hammer and calf when running happens. I'm back to walk-run-walk-run sessions twice a week but that's as much to keep my head sane as anything else - nothing's getting fixed.

So, now we've moved on to the specialist route. The go-to solution for the last 20 years would be a steroid injection at this stage but a lot of modern thinking frowns on this as it doesn't really heal the injury. So, tomorrow and on Oct 14th, I'll be getting platelets injections into the joint. They take some of your blood, spin it in the centrifuge, select the platelets, mix them in a solution, and then inject them into the joint. In theory the platelet cells drive accelerated healing. Then, no running at all for two months - just gym work.

If / when that fails, arthroscopy is the fallback plan.

So, that's me.

Meanwhile, also me:

Feck it, I just couldn't resist it when the mail came in advertising the entries. Every marathon I've run has been BQ, but this year I was a full hour inside the qual time and ego got the better of the crocked knee situation - kind of pathetic, in a way.

I had to laugh at the Boston reg!!

Tough scene with the injury though. I'm not much better, and getting a fooking MRI in this country takes an absolute age. The Govt doesn't really allow private clinics to operate them. Some such stupidity anyway.

Also, the sanity thing is a bit of an issue. Physio told me to take a couple of real easy weeks and even avoid walking, but I did a tiny bit more yesterday and could feel the pain in the background...... after a 2.5k walk, ffs.

BT & Carmona i share yer pain and frustration, Last few years in our club they have an annual award for club member most likely to get injured, I have won it last two years, but this year competition will be intense, so many people getting injured, Years of miles piling up taking its toll

THOMAS KENT 10k cancelled due to weather forecast, Pity, I will try to get some miles in tomorrow morning early,
FFS, these weather warnings are a joke - race organisers having to cancel a long-planned event because of some extra-careful bullshit in Met Eireann.
Wait till you see, tomorrow at 11:00 will probably be grand - with “standard” Irish wet weather coming on as the day progresses.

Edit - That's what you wanted me to say Jimmy, right? ;)
