I've calmed down about this over the past 24 hours and I suspect others might too. The name didn't exist until 1976. Generally called 'the Park' the facility on the present site was the Athletic Grounds which was located 'down the park.' The Park is long gone. Fords put an end to it. Fords, and many other industries built on the old park, are gone too. Yet we all still refer to the site as 'the Park,' many of us not even knowing that 'the Park' of which our fathers and grandfathers spoke was not 'the Pairc' of Pairc Ui Chaoimh. In some ways, it was the Ui Chaoimh name that actually disrupted the continuity, and none of us ever used the name.
Change is inevitable. I feel for the Chaoimh family, but perhaps their anger might be assuaged by a large statue of the man outside the ground? And perhaps that could come with a nice plaque honouring his contribution to the GAA?
