Does anybody remember: Cork Hibernians in 1972

Wiggie and the Dav were my heroes. Met Wiggie a few times up in Lennox's all right when I was living in the Glasheen Road area. RIP.

Anyone remember a two leg affair against Coleraine back around 73/74? Cup Winners Cup it may have been. As far as I recall, Hibs won the match in the Lodge 2-0 but my memory of the game is not good at all, apart from a bit of a standoff between the sets of supporters that wasn't really that serious.

I think you are thinking of the A.I. Blaxnit Cup that used to be played at seasons end between the top 4 L.O.I. and I.L. clubs. In 1971 Hibs reached the final against Linfield. Hibs "home second-leg" had to be played in Dalymount as Linfield didn't want to come to the "deep south". There was a lot of trouble at the game and there was a famous picture in The Irish Times of a garda smashing his baton into the face of an innocent Linfield fan, breaking his glasses in the process.

With your help, four european cup games of cork hibs against schalke 04 and borussia mönchengladbach now are published with game details on weltfussball.de:

1972: Hibs - Schalke 04 0:0: http://www.worldfootball.net/spielb...2-1973-2-runde-cork-hibernians-fc-schalke-04/

1972: Schalke - Hibs: 3:0: http://www.worldfootball.net/spielb...2-1973-2-runde-fc-schalke-04-cork-hibernians/

1971: Hibs - Mönchengladbach 0:5: http://www.worldfootball.net/spielb...1-runde-cork-hibernians-bor-moenchengladbach/

1971: Mönchengladbach - Hibs 2:1: http://www.worldfootball.net/spielb...1-runde-bor-moenchengladbach-cork-hibernians/

Thanks for your assistance!

He had a heart attack I think it was, I was best mates with his son, also called Dave. Was at his funeral in Schull, was an absolute gent.

:)
Was he living in Schull Liam and what did he do for a living there?
I had always thought that he went back to England after he split up with Frances as I stopped seeing him around the city.

my old man played for them back in the 70's... i can ask him to type up a team sheet for me and maybe scan a few photo's

Nostalgia

Sorry I got to this a bit late but these posts bring it all back.

I also used to ask a man to bring me in (innocent days) and even remember when you could get in via the back pitch in Con. Lived two goal kicks away from the Lodge and first memory is of giving the ball back to Jackie Morley when sitting on the wall at the side of the pitch - no fences then.

The ref in the famous Waterford match was John Carpenter from Dublin; was nearly lynched that day as he gave a very dubious penalty to Waterford when the ball struck 'Chunky' Herrick on the arm.

Anyone read 'The Dav'? Booker prize material it ain't but worth it for the memories it brought back. Some good photos as well.

From the other Capital.......................:)

That twat Carpenter also stopped a Finn Harps-v-Cork Hibs game because of fog with Hibs leading 1-0. He also robbed Celtic in an F.A.I. Cup game at Turners Cross. Against Drogheda in 1974 I think.

Any links to "The Dav"? I'd love to read it and have memories flooding back!
