Does anybody remember: Cork Hibernians in 1972

AOH sold to an independent buyer who was working on behalf of the GAA.
Played on the pitch myself. It was an amazing surface.

Flower Lodge was a great place to go for games.I lived just a few hundred yards away and from the age of 5 I used to go with my Dad.By the time I was 6 I would make my own way there and ask some adult to lift me over the turnstiles..innocent times.

Yup

no suprise there

as a youngster I remember it being not only the best surface i've ever seen (and i've walked on Old Trafford and other pitches many times; wasn't it Stanley Matthews who said it was the best he's played on or is it a myth?) but also quite a big sized stadium in many ways and before health and safety was an issue there were amazing crowds there even beyond it's 70s heyday

The Cobh ramblers v sligo rovers marathon cup semi's were incredible as were Citys first games (i remember a huge last minute win v Derry who brought a huge crowd)

I also remember the Cork crowd openly racially abusing the black player who player for Sligo in ways which would not be tolerated now

At least we have progressed as a country in some ways

FAI Cup vs Derry 1986 ? Ian Hennessy with the last minute winner in front of a full house. Euphoria after the match. Back in the day before Sky Sports and City were a huge attraction...

I remember Hennessys celebration with the fans.
Some of my best memories are Rodney Marshs free kick,
Grady hanging from the goal posts.the local derbys with Celtic.

That's good to hear Ralf. Long live worldfootball.net!!!

:)
Don't I know it Liam.
Carl Davenport ( "The Dav" ) married an Echo girl by the name of Crosbie! ;)

Wiggie and the Dav were my heroes. Met Wiggie a few times up in Lennox's all right when I was living in the Glasheen Road area. RIP.

Anyone remember a two leg affair against Coleraine back around 73/74? Cup Winners Cup it may have been. As far as I recall, Hibs won the match in the Lodge 2-0 but my memory of the game is not good at all, apart from a bit of a standoff between the sets of supporters that wasn't really that serious.

I know, fuckin disaster. The AOH were the real impostors there though. Aren't I right in saying that City matched the asking price only for these fuckers to turn around and sell to the GAA?

I remember the curved stanchions well. I even bought the subbutteo ones as a tribute to the lodge!

From what I remember, Cork Con were very interested in buying "The Lodge" to extend their Ballintemple ground. If that had happened big Soccer games could still have been staged as Rugby people had no anti bias against any other sports.
