Does anybody remember: Cork Hibernians in 1972

Don't think so

Think it was gonna be houses till the GAA stepped in

I had the pleasure of going there for years as a fan and even as my old man played lower league football there

I even have video footage of myself kicking a ball around it when i was about 7 i'd love to find it

Memories...
I had the good fortune to play on that beautiful surface back in the day. 1982 I think.
I couldn't believe that I was treading the same pitch as my heroes gone before.

Anyway, I scored one, broke my ankle and played the second half in goal.

I will never forget the Lodge for many reasons...:D

Some fellas are still v bitter towards Frank Murphy about this as well...story goes that GAA didnt really need it and he saw an opportunity to kill soccer in the city.

Its probably as likely to be ineptitute on part of FAI and Cork Hibs/Celtic/City though.

I just read up on it there again and it looks to me as though the FAI were probably the ones to blame as they didn't show enough interest in keeping it a soccer venue. When they heard that City were interested in buying it, they could have subsidised the City bid but they chose not to citing some shite about the development of Dalymount as an excuse.

There seemed to be some controversy over ownership too because public subscriptions were used in the initial purchase and development of the grounds even though the AOH grounds committee were the ones who ended up getting the full benefits of the sale.

Yup

no suprise there

as a youngster I remember it being not only the best surface i've ever seen (and i've walked on Old Trafford and other pitches many times; wasn't it Stanley Matthews who said it was the best he's played on or is it a myth?) but also quite a big sized stadium in many ways and before health and safety was an issue there were amazing crowds there even beyond it's 70s heyday

The Cobh ramblers v sligo rovers marathon cup semi's were incredible as were Citys first games (i remember a huge last minute win v Derry who brought a huge crowd)

I also remember the Cork crowd openly racially abusing the black player who player for Sligo in ways which would not be tolerated now

At least we have progressed as a country in some ways
