Cork u20 Hurling 2024

I bow deference to the better informed but Shane Kingston and Lyons are both mooted as being super old school full backs but neither seem to feature anywhere in a senior context. Is this due to the step up etc.? I understand the position is specialised labour but if these lads are doing it should they not be somewhere near. Also this is not a position where you bide your time in the corner and then earn the right to play 3 you are either a full back or you are not. Back in the 80s Brian Murphy and Denis Mulcahy were switched and hated it and even Seanie O G was shoehorned and failed . Denis Walsh stomached it in 1990 and Sully was never fully happy despite a great few years after John O Driscoll was thought to be a club player......
I think it's the step up.

10 years ago we'd be talking about Lyons or Shane Kingston as U21 players with a view to them playing national league at 21 or 22. Hopefully impressing and then maybe featuring in championship.

Now the physicality at senior has increased and the U21 grade has dropped to U20 so physicality has decreased. Its going to take longer for most (not all) to catch up. Look at Eoin Downey last year, Adam Screeny this year. The physical gap is just too great.

Personally think the GAA have it all wrong and we should go back to the traditional U18 and U21 age groups.

Strong performance last night, worth the drive in shitty conditions. Organisation and structure is excellent, every lad knew what they were doing and how they were working the ball, keeper and full back were doing loads of talking to steer things at the back. This is a seriously well drilled team.

Physically / athletically they are impressive also, more pace than Waterford in lots of positions, Lyons powering out from 3 is a serious operator, Darragh O’Sullivan, Buckley, Cremin have loads of pace also.

Accuracy was another stand-out, I think the first 10 or 11 shots at goal all went over, I only had 3 wides counted 10 minutes into the second half. Buckley and Leahys shooting on another level. New lads did well. Both Killeagh minors are going to be great additions, and I was impressed with the half back line… the CB o’regan was given license to roam clearly and he’s very athletic. Tobin very good in the air, and tidy taking the ball out of trouble. Never created a proper goal chance all night which was disappointing, penalty wasn’t a good one either.

I’m like a broken record on Healy, but he’s like a 20 year old Harnedy but with the potential to be even better. Catches ball he has no right to catch. He might do a coaching session with the senior team on this - as we don’t have any lad as good as him at it. Got a superb point in the first half. Himself, Buckley, Lyons stood out a mile. Lyons wasn’t troubled by Patrick Fitz at all really. Tougher challenges ahead for sure, but there are some serious lads coming through.

The ED situation was a bit messy last year so I guess they’re leaving off any u20s until they graduate out of it. IMO we’re missing out on 1 or 2 (Healy + Lyons perhaps) but I see the logic of it too.

Re full back - tough one to come in at such a young age, although Lawlor has done it over the the last 3 years for KK.

Not sure about the concept that you are a full back or you’re not… Fintan Burke, Jj Delaney, Morrissey with Limerick, Breen with Tipp, Cleary with Clare all converted full backs
