I remember Chris Hughton getting vile racist abuse as he was competing for a ball in the corner by the Tory Top end. And people laughed and or gasped, but none spoke up.

Don't think/hope that would not be tolerated today.

And he was an Irish international too. Did that really happen?

I remember English teams coming over every year in the 80's. Liverpool in 85. I remember Everton too. Think they beat Cork City 2-0. Man United too. Also Leeds Utd maybe the year after.

100% it happened. Remember it like yesterday. Just really stood out as a kid and only hearing that word said on movies. As play was in the corner, he let out a vile “nnnnigger”. As I said, the response was Jesus uttered in a chuckle, a few sharp intakes and a few disbelieving sighs. And of course his mates laughing.
