Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Fair enough experimenting but I’d genuinely question can we afford to take him out of corner back? I don’t think anyone’s out their hand up as a marquee option and I already think we’ve structure issues in the back line.

Corner back is such a specialised position as you’re generally marking the opposing sides main man. Sean isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but besides him I think we lack real quality 1:1 man markers.
Your making fair points. We do lack quality defensive corner backs but also a ball winning, athletic, physical midfielder who can take on a Will O Donoghue (Limerick). Im just looking for options. Can SOD do a job there if we have other corner back cover? To his credit, SOD is Corks most improved player over the past 5 years and always gives 100% effort, physically he is a block. He is Corks go to man marker and plays out in front alot but can be caught out of position, think Conor Whelans goal vs Galway last year. Hopefully Wayne Sherlock( class corner back) coaching can help here. Im not picking on SOD, I'm a fan.

A major challenge for PR is tightening our defensive this year, can we develope defensive options, E Downey played very well corner back in u20 winning sides, lets try him and others, nows the time to experiment.

Injured Alot? While he got dropped last year with a little niggle he was top scorer in Club league & championship. Works his ass off in games, always gets in hooks & blocks opposed to silly frees that Cork forwards give. If you want to give Limerick a battle Dalton will be in his prime opposed to some light fast nacky player that will be torn a part as we have seen many times before.
Agreed

Possible Team v Limerick

P Collins
S O Donoghue - R Downey - S O Leary Hayes
E Downey - C Joyce - E Twomey
D Cahalane - B Roche
S Twomey - C Lehane - D Dalton
R O Flynn - B Hayes - P Horgan

Thoughts?
Like that a lot, especially your half back line. Delighted to see Brian Roche going well yesterday, I was hoping he’d have been used more last year but maybe it was a few injuries that prevented that, not sure but I think he has a great chance of starting midfield.

D cahalane will start on the championship side and rightly so if you look at how he has improved his game 5 to 10% each season and better understands what he can do and can’t do. Midfield? Maybe, more likely at wing back or full back though.

SOLH justs needs to search deep inside to find his inner tinker and up his intensity in the defending department - he’s too nice, but I could see get him a spot, good hurler and good athlete… just watch mikey butler from last season - it can be done.

Forward line looking strong but I think you’re willing Seán Twomey to do the business as opposed to him actually doing it yet in any of the chances he has got over the last couple of seasons. And maybe fair enough - give him 2 league starts but he wouldn’t be on my championship side yet. And on that theme, you’d have to say JOC has to be worth backing to get back to where he was 2 seasons ago - he’s a guaranteed starter and guaranteed goal getter / creator if he’s at his best - an absolute nightmare for opposition defenders (by way of contrast Seán T is probably meat and drink to a lot of strong IC defenders).

Beausang is worth a league start also, but getting a half forward line is the priority and going back to Damien - that’s actually where I’d have him but don’t think that will happen unfortunately.

Twomey is just a bulldozer and cant think fast enough or hurl at this level. He nearly gave away more in frees than he contributed yesterday and even if u look at him at club level he only scores about 1p in games where Hayes has been a great addition this year which rules out converting backs like last year. Meade hasn't contributed much either in any game and likewise he doesn't even stand out in club games whilst only shines as unmarked 3rd midfielders which Tommy O Connell can fit as well as sweeper or Marking up with needle and hardness. Pity Downey doesn't have the extra yard as he can scoop and clear a ball in a crowd as many the time, made of wire but just a liability for pace fullback as teams will go 2 full forward in Summer championship and open us for 2 fast goals so unless Daire O Leary can prove himself that leaves Cork with 2 positions that we can't fill confidenly Full Back & Goalkeeper.

lucky to win yesterday but great to see the mental toughness to come back and see it out at the end. It’s interesting to look at the list of players who were NOT involved yesterday - Daire O Leary, Eoin Downey, Ethan Twomey, Joyce, Mark Coleman, Ger Millerick, Tim O Mahony, Connery, Dara Fitz, Flynn, Harnedy, Conor Cahalane, Kingston, Alan Cadogan, Connolly, Beausang That’s another team lads of equal if not better ability to what started yesterday and also Barrett, Lehane and O Connor only came on late in the game yesterday so their impact was minimal compared to what it could have been

I think we need a bit of perspective lads - Ryan is building a squad and there are plenty positives for this time of the year. Aside from Ben O Connor I can’t think of any outfield player not involved that should be so Ryan has assembled the best of what we have and we have some big men in the mix now as well as players with natural pace so game plans a A, B, C, D should be possible depending on the opposition and this will be needed - to beat Limerick we will probably need a big dominant, physical half back line and big strong wing forwards and full forward and surround them with pace

Based on multiple players being out injured etc and the players I have seen over the last 3 games I would start this team v Limerick in 2 weeks

Collins
SOD. Cahalane. NOL
Joyce. R Downey. E Downey
E Twomey Meade
Hayes Lehane S Twomey
O Flynn Dalton O Connor

Lehane to roam as Hannon won’t follow him if playing

Barrett, Hoggy, O Connell, B Roche, Conor Cahalane, SOLH, Eoin Roche ( very good for UCC in last 2 games at corner back ) on bench

No. Scraped 3 lucky wins. Ryan and his team of lackies have already shown they are totally out of their depth. The only question remains is whether a new management team are put in place now or after the inevitable league shambles.

A few lads who haven’t seen game time:

Cian Walsh - excellent for Barrs
Cillian O’Donovan - a few good seasons for Douglas
Aaron Myers - the best 12 in last year’s championship.

John O’Flynn can hurl and defend.

Interesting comment from PR which ties in with what we are seeing at the moment - "We haven’t a lot done tactically, and we’ve been concentrating on effort, attitude, and physicality."

Are they on the training panel?
