Opted out or were forced out? The animosity towards Clon certainly didn’t only begin today or yesterday.
The mistreatment of Clon players by Cork selectors goes far far back, if Eoin OMahony and Padraigh Griffin were Kerry men, they’d be talked about in the same breath as Maurice Fitz and the Gooch.
It does go far back.
It was often said that all the outside players who carried “Clon” to the counties in the 30s & 40s (Clon were really just a west cork divisional side that time) & those who won the All Ireland for Cork in 1945 would not have got on the Cork team if they were born Clon men. None greater than Carbery Rangers man & brilliant Cork midfielder Facthna O Donovan , The 4 Barryroe men including Mick Finn who was captain the 40s & his brother, Ardfield’s school teacher Griffin, Ballincolligs famous Hitler Healy who was also brilliant Cork hurler too,Casey from Macroom, the famous Liam Grainger & another of the Dohenys, Packie Nyhan from Randal og who was captain in the 30s, a Bantry man, Hayes & the well known Burke of Castlehaven as well as those 3 Kerry men including Tom Moriarty who did go on to captain Clon & play for Cork in the 50s.
Several players from Leap played with Clon in the 60s but they didn’t make County.
I was told that Clons first senior county 100 years ago was mostly a Carbery Rangers team. Is that true?
As you mention it.. There is no getting away from that Kerry connection.. Griffin, Quirke, Cahill & Dillon in the 60s/70s.. O Shea of late etc
You’d the 3 Scallys in the 80s etc
You’ve the recent North Cork men Tom Mannix & Barrett(just in Limerick) & Martin O Brien Mallow
Mayo man Conor McManus., Clare player Noel Griffin.
Fair play to “Clon”.. ????
