Flood defences plans for Cork are on display in City Hall. Worth a visit if you're nearby or can be viewed online at http://www.lowerleefrs.ie/.
Most of it is common sense stuff. Quay walls on Morrison's Island, a better flood forecasting system, changing how much water can be released from the Dam. However some interesting options include raising the footbridge at Cornmarket Street and the one by the Mercy to allow more water flow under them.

Yes, imagine, the audacity of these pesky objectors. How dare they oppose such a wonderful project.

Perhaps read the content of the objections. The flood proposals are overwhelmingly an engineering-based solution that is way over the top (literally) and which will have a seriously negative impact in the city centre. Many cities that experience flooding avoid the need for cheap and nasty culverting schemes. This is old fashioned heavy engineering. What's the point in solving one problem by creating another.
