RTE are undoubtedly a can of piss but they are doing what any media organisation would do here, milk it! The blame lies with the GAA, they are obsessed with commercial income for an âamateurâ sporting organisation. Tom Dempsey, an All-Ireland winner with Wexford, reckons âhurling is being driven into the groundâ as another weekend will pass without a live game on terrestrial television.
Dempsey has branded it as âabsolutely scandalousâ that marquee hurling championship ties like this coming Saturdayâs Munster SHC clash between Cork and Limerick are only available on GAAGO.
âWe were promised it was all going to be reviewed and itâs worse this year,â Dempsey told the Irish Independent.
âWhat kind of marketing department would be keeping this from the general public?
âI donât know whether itâs RTĂ or the GAA, but somebody needs to be held accountable. They said they were going to review all of this, what were the results of that review?
âWhere were they published? We were told this was going to be reviewed. They were talking about it in the DĂĄil and the Seanad, but itâs actually worse this year.
âHurling needs help and weâre not getting it. Itâs just not being promoted. The diamond in our sporting crown thatâs unique to us and weâre not promoting it.â
Given that GAAGO is a pay-per-view streaming service that relies on strong broadband, Dempsey insists that access is difficult for many people, including the elderly.
The 1996 All-Ireland SHC winner also feels that the GAA and RTĂ have a lot to answer for in terms of why hurling is not being put front and centre like other sports.
âI have absolutely no problem with rugby in Croke Park, but the GAA did a better job of promoting rugby than their own sports last weekend,â Dempsey added. âI would love to see Croke Park open to all sports, but weâre not promoting our own games at all. Hurling is being absolutely driven into the ground.
âWeâll end up that itâll be an underground sport, like the hedge schools, if weâre not careful.
âIâm going down to train young lads tonight and want them to have seen their heroes on television. That gives me such a benefit in promoting the game to youngsters.
âI want them to be taking a free like Lee Chin or Patrick Horgan or TJ Reid, but theyâre just not seeing it. Itâs really going to run hurling into the ground compared to the other sports.
âIâve nothing against League of Ireland, but you could have six or seven thousand at a match and theyâll have it on television, whereas you have nearly 40,000 at Clare and Cork and itâs not on television. Whoâs making the decisions on this?â

It's they way they schedule it, Waterford had 3 of their games on GAAGO last year, it will be Limerick or Tipp next year. I think Mallow Betty broke it down somewhere here last year. It's a farce.
Or they realised Cork Hurling is a cash cow. Will be interesting to see them state higher viewing figures and that they are doing a better job than last year when in fact the reason may be 3 Cork Hurling games. That's if it happens to be true of course.
