the wine thread

An auld Puy-Blanquet 2018 there with a classic paella. Not necessarily a match made in heaven. The claret (see what I did just there?) was a bit ropey at the start but improved after an hour or so. St Émilion has never really been my favourite Bordeaux and I think this confirms that. I like most others, Paulliac, St Estephe, Margaux, and that.

O' Briens wine sale this weekend.

Any recommendations from our panel of experts?
I had a look - nothing there really jumps out, I'm not a massive fan of the Monte Real GR rioja they are pushing as the big deal, and i is definitely not a €35 wine to begin with either. I ordered nothing

Dropped into Dunnes wine section last night as the missus was doing the shop, they have 20% off all french wines, and a bunch of others too.. found some tasty drops amongst that:

Laurent Miquel Bardou Saint Chinian Grande Cuvée 2019 - got for €16 a go, nice value at that

Laurent Miquel Bardou Saint Chinian Grande Cuvée 750ml

Château Grand Moulin Macquin Montagne Saint-Emilion 2019 - €14.40 a shot

Château Grand Moulin Macquin Montagne Saint-Emilion 750ml

I fired this one up here earlier in the thread, whenever I spot it reduced I buy a few.. lovely wine and well worth the €16
Château de Pierreux Brouilly, 2019

Château de Pierreux Brouilly 750ml

and threw a pair of these in.. wouldn't be the best St Em ever but its a decent wine and for €13 odd you wouldn't be leaving it there.
Grand Vin De Bordeaux Royal Saint-Emilion, 2019

Grand Vin De Bordeaux Royal Saint-Emilion 75cl

Link to the lot here:

To be fair to Dunnes, they have by far the best selection of wines and price points of the large chains in my opinion

is the sale an actual sale or just moving prices around? don't go there often enough to tell.

O Briens sales tend to be genuine, but they are cyclical and its their way of doing business.. there are definitely wines there that they would never manage to sell at the original price point. I tend to keep an eye on them for a few wines I like.. when they go on offer I buy a few boxes and its there whenever you want it then.

Picked up two x 6 bottles of fairly cheap Montepulciano the other day. One seems decent enough. A tenner a bottle on offer. Also got a little Bordeaux yoke for 4.95!!! Gonna try that later. Sure, if it's shit.....

Further to Honky calling me an alcoholic behind my back in another thread...

I opened one of these last weekend and was unreal. Light and easily drinkable (too easy) in the bright autumn sunshine.

Needed a solid 30 mins open before attacking though by which time it had smoothed out.

Had it with a charcuterie board, cheeses and some Tartine bread. Happiness is...
