the wine thread

Talk to me about natural wines, Pret a Mange.

I see the young and hip children of Cork slugging it back and pretending that they are in Shoreditch instead of being junkie adjacent on Union Quay.

Are these things like sours and goses on the craft beer scene? i.e. They taste like gone-off booze and yet nobody will admit it.

Is this acid-reflux waiting to happen?

The bottles that it comes in resembles something my late grandmother would have called "minerals" in the 1980s.

lol.. Pret a Mange :lol!:

Now on to the important stuff.. I couldn't give a monkeys about natural wines, low intervention wines, organic wines or any of the shite that attaches itself to it. I want good wine, and don't particularly care if its any of the aforementioned.. in fact more often than not the wines i have tried that were sold under those banners have been underwhelming and sold on that back of the fact that they are low intervention rather than being kick ass wines

Having said that I have had a few outstanding low intervention wines in certain restaurants where the sommelier was proposing something different to your usual drop. I had one in Ard Bia in Galway that was great craic, really pale in the glass with bits of grape skin floating around in the wine, thing is it was recommended by a waiter from Italy who knew exactly what he was suggesting. In fact all of the best ones I've had have been from Etna as theres a bit of a cult going there on the volcano, but there getting really saucy price wise too.

Any restaurant review with things like 'oh, and they have a great low-intervention wine list' should be dumped immediately IMO

So after reading all that, I gleaned that you have been to a fancy gaff in Galway for your dinner.

Fair play to you, I'm delighted by your continued success.

You'll note that my last two posts regarding wine recommendations have been from fucking Aldi and fucking Lidl!

I'm trying to keep it real for the common man/woman/LGTBQWYAHYATM.

Now.... and without any more humble bragging about the fucking shoes that you wear whilst getting scuttered... natural wines?

Yes / no.

Tick as applicable.

For the love of Christ.

O' Briens wine sale this weekend.

Any recommendations from our panel of experts?

Nothing in that O'Briens list really stands out to me. Curious Wines on Tramore Rd. also have a sale on wines (this month's countries are France, Argentina and Austria).

These French reds are (in my arrogant opinion) all worth a punt - and a bargain;

Austrian whites are the tits for dry wines. Grüner Veltliner and Gelbe Muskateller are my go to

Can't opine lads as I'm not in Ireland. Had an old go-to tonight, the entry level E. Guigal Cotes du Rhône. 'Twas on offer and all, got it for 7.95 I think. Been drinking this now for 20 years I'd say and while it won't knock your socks off, it's a guaranteed good value tasty red.
