The Official Athletics Thread

Penn Relays is this weekend

On Athletics Club taking in Dublin track club for the 4 x mile.

It'd be Ollie Hoare, Geordie Beamish, Morgan McdDonald and Joe Klecker for OAC

Vs Andrew Coscoran, Paul Robinson, Sean Tobin and Hiko Tenosa for Ireland

I hope OAC actually run (Mcdonald has been injured)

But Our fellas have been training in Melbourne and are now living in Flagstaff according to Sonia's column in the Times

The old record is 15.47 set in Dublin in 1985 by Eamon Coughlan, Ray Flynn, Frank O'Meara and Marcus O'Sullivan

Itll be on YouTube somewhere by Sunday morning
That'll be a race to watch - the 1985 race was a procession.

You forgot the Brian Fay win in a college 5000 there last week. Unbelievable kick to catch the bloke who had 30 metres on him with 300 to go. 13.15 or so the time.

Didn't forget, totally missed it

Cracking finish. Morgan Beadlescome, the fella he outkicked is a favourite for the NCAA mile behind Yarad Naguse.

He's a bit unusual because he came back for an extra year of eligibility cos of Covid so he's a year or two older than the rest of them

Unbelievable finish

Also made a langer of myself on Penn relays they're next week not this week

Btw, in the video of the 5k, they got Fay wrong a few times. He wasn't third with 3 laps to go, he was about 7th! And mostly not in the picture.

Great read out of Cathal Dennehy

Nike's Ben Thomas Oregon group had a cut off this last Saturday and came up well short. Shows how good the 85 record is

The 85 record is 3.57 and change per man which seems like it should be doable with super spikes but the Nike's big middle distance boys Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker (with Brit James West and Matt Wisner) only managed 15:52. Olympic finalist Cole Hocker with a 3.51pb from 2 months ago when 3.57. Cooper Teare did well at 3:53. The other were about 4 each.

Nike getting a mountain of shit on twitter for having their athletes time trial at home with pacing lights rather than run the Penn Relays in an actual race.

4x mile was a load of shit. Beamish and Mcdonald were injured before hand. Replaced by Ben Flanagan a 5k guy and a Swiss fella called Tom Elmer who i never heard of. Flanagan can ran 3.41 to beat Hobbs Kessler last week but lead out in 4.07. Waste of time.

On went 16.04. Dublin Track Club 16.10. Beat a decent empire state outfit. That 85 record stands strong

Very interesting interview with Brian Fay here
On the Sundayplodcast

He has a great attitude. Real Eye of the tiger stuff

Sarah Healy ran a fine pb the other day in Ostreva. 4:02 I think.
Yeah spot on. Took 3 seconds off Sonia's old record from 1991. So even with the shoes that record would have gone with a performance like that.

Some promising Irish performances recently Darragh McEllhenny took his 5k PB from 13:4x to 13:17 for a new U23 5k record by 9 seconds from John Treacy 1978. His progress is phenomenal should be in the mix for a few diamond league invites with a time like that.

The diamond leagues have been hotting up. All the big guns seem to be going head to head this year very little ducking out of races.

Jacob looked untouchable running away from the field in the bowerman mile at the Pre calssic and Aragawai did similar for a 12.5x in the 5k.

Not long to worlds now. I think the window for irish athletes to run the standard is 26th June. NCAA champs is 11th June so the next few weeks should have plenty of action

Good run from Barry Keane from Waterford for 9th in the NCAA 10km in 28:19

Feargal Curtin from Youghal AC was 20th in 28:5x

The favourite Abdi Nur took a bit of a hammering. Brit Charles Hicks took a literal hammering someone bust his nose open with an elbow. Not something you see often. Cameras missed it though

The rest of Mens finals in the small hours of Friday night sat morning. Womens Saturday night into Sunday irish time.

Rome DL is tonight at 19:00 on the Beeb low key enough
