Recycle / Re-Turn

Sad to see the usual grumpy old men still bitching and moaning about this plastic bottle initiative, which has been in operation in countries like Germany for decades.
In other countries like Germany and Spain and so on it's much better run, that's the issue.
While it's getting better and getting over the teething issues here it still simply is not good enough.
In the like's of Spain and Germany you see the homeless/unfortunate collecting bottles from the streets/paths/grass and in some cases even going through bins. They therefore don't hassle people for money or sitting in doorways for hours on end.

Government have made millions off people's laziness. Bin collectors have also made some serious money going through those people's bins who are lazy and separating themselves and bringing to deposit bins. In some cases parking the truck right at the forecourt and doing it in public view. Extra few hundred euro for them a week.

Anyone saying it's a green and environmental initiative are delusional. 80% (give or take) of the country pay to have a recycling bin and recycle already.
Most shops now have these machines plugged in all day everyday, even when out of order using electricity. People are now driving to the shop more often to reclaim the money. That's more wear and tear on the car and emitting more emissions. I myself keep my bottles over a week or 2 and then head to the shop to get a refund.
Imagine living anywhere rural. People are caught up thinking that they're saving money or making money by doing it including a TD.... It's your hard earned money (that you have already been taxed on) that when you purchase a plastic bottle or can it's basically another tax, in other countries it's included in the price. Here it's added on.

Biggest issue I have is the accessibility for those with a physical disability, these machines are not one bit accessible and it's making people less independent as they have to ask staff for help.

Remember the red fish that you'd get in a Christmas cracker - curls up both ends/head/tail if you're jealous/in love/kind etc etc kinda bollix. Think the red plastic is the same as that on the old Lucozade bottles just red instead of orange. Just thought I'd mention that
My buddy said back in the 70s his dad told him he was getting them a coloured TV, My buddy wasnt impressed to discover his old fella
had taped that lucozade wrapper across the screen,

It's actually not a big deal, lazy people offset that cost x10, scheme already made millions in fee not being claimed back, that's all the point. Few teens pulling it up and down will get beating from the shop owner they are hurting and that will stop

So have a think about that. A private company has been set up to take advantage and generate huge profits from something that has become compulsory by law.

Imagine if there was a compulsary 1cent communication surcharge on each and every phone call made where people could at the end of each week calculate how many phonecalls they made and apply for a rebate. There'd be millions in fees not being claimed back there too.

Plastic is still getting recycled albeit now the collection is from super-market car parks rather than peoples' own bins.

Do other countries like Germany permit crushed bottles in their system? Do they already have recyclables collected (at a charge to the citizen) from the citizen's own property?

Plastic bottle initiative or Plastic bottle scam?

Just imaging the State trying to run this?

It would be a total disaster like everything else that our public servants mis-manage.

All new things have teething issues and as you go to the shop anyway just bring your bag of bottles and cans with your and get your money back.

We used to be able to bring bottles back to shops I think and get paid and now we bring it back to a machine and get paid and the bottles and cans etc are stored safely so we do not have them littering the streets or desperate homeless people rifling our bins in public trying to raise cash.

Theres a myriad of problems with this latest green scheme.

First and foremost supermarkets have across-the-board increased the price of bottles and cans on top of the recycle charge .

Secondly Ive yet to see any cost benefit analysis of the marginal gains in recycling numbers as opposed to the carbon cost of operating and maintaining these machines.

Its certainly the experience of most that lugging your bags to more than one machine is necessary.

Its additional cost and hassle to people in a high inflationary period with no clear benefits.

Theres going to be uproar when they publish their annual accounts and it becomes clear just how much money Re-Turn is making.
You get the extra money (the incentive to re-cycle) back in the scheme and all new things have teething problems.

All the big supermarkets, warehouses and shops have covered their roofs in solar panels now to cut their energy bills since Vlad invaded Ukraine.

I pick up rubbish (papers, plastic, wrappers, cans and bottles etc) from my adjacent stream probably once a month spring to late autumn and take the bags of rubbish to the Kinsale road re-cycling centre or into my own re-cycling bins. I used to pile all the plastic bottles in a heap as they were the easiest to collect and sort.

I now collect very few if any now since this scheme came in.

I did however see one of our ethnic diverse families who like to move around a lot empty their many bottles and cans right on to the ground from a whole family eating snacks in their big family SUV in Ballyvolane Dunnes when about 10 meters away the locals were all recycling their many bottles and cans etc.

I said nothing as I did not want to end up in A+E

You don't get extra money back in the scheme. You get the money that you've had to pay over and above, returned to you, if and when the scheme actually works. And many suppliers have used that extra (temporary) charge to mask actual price increases for their goods.

The fact that you can't grasp that even when it's been explained to you a number of times speaks volumes.

Jeez.
