Rage against the Machine for Christmas No 1

Heh heh heh,

now Joe doesn't even have the bonus of a #1 single before sliding into obscurity.

Either way it's more cash in Sony's back pocket.

How is it legitamising it when it's showing how easily it can be disrupted by a hashed together facebook campaign? Come on.

I see where you're coming from, don't get me wrong - Rage's first album was the first CD I ever bought and I don't believe their music has dated a day since 1991. I meant that when you fight for something it's inferred that the something is worth fighting over - in this case the #1 chart position - These days an inversely proportional indicator of musical merit.

You're putting a talentless teenager singing a cover song from a Hannah Montanna movie who wrote nothing and probably can't even play an instrument up against hard rock hall of famers and cheering "yay!" when the latter wins as part of a protest vote in a popularity contest.

The cynic might even wonder it was a masterstroke by Sony marketing, but I don't think those idiots are up to orchastrating something that clever.

No doubt someone will try the same thing next year and I wish them luck so long as they take a more altruistic approach, back an independent act this time and don't end up giving more money to the big 4.

I'm not "that" into it. It's not meant to be revolutionary, just a bit of a laugh and a good step forward. People always mistake that.

I don't like how every smartass is using this as an excuse to be clever. It always rubs me the wrong way - people who do sweet fuck all towards anything acting like everyone's a hypocrite for participating in something. At worst it's a bit of fun.

Here Here, well said

"every fan and freedom fighter"......for fuck's sake!

Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?

So, one guy's taking it a bit too seriously. Still way more awesome to have a real band with a No.1 than X Factor shite.

Next year they should try some Death Metal though. Fucking Entombed.

The problem is that independant artists won't have the same pull as Rage. This is the same thing I'll say when people bitch about Rage being on a major label in general. Generally, the better the label you have the better known you'll be(though this isn't a 1:1 thing obviously), so most of the artists from Indie labels won't be as well known as Rage so probably won't get anywhere with this. Rage won but by a narrow victory.

I agree - If it took a band as universally liked in indie/rock/metal circles as rage to pull off the upset, then yes I'd say another independent would be hard pushed to replicate the success. Personally I don't blame Rage being on a big label, it was probably their manager's/accountant's/agent's call anyway and done in the name of profit which is hard to argue with. Bands exist to make a living out of their efforts so it's hard to criticise a move to a big label. At the same time I imagine a well recouped band as big as Rage would be able to call a lot of shots but I don't know the details of their deal with Sony.
