meh, electro

it seems to be everywhere these days.. everyone's harping on about it, and has been for the past year or more.. i'm a bit tired of it to be honest.. i haven't really heard that much good electro recently that doesn't sound generic and... meh...

about 2 years ago i asked menno (cal's mate, amsterdam DJ, played at bass) what he sees becoming big in the next year or so and he said minimal techno... and he was right... but it's kind of peaked along with the electro thing...

my question is, where does everyone see electronic music going in the foreseeable future?...

there's a very healthy breaks/grime scene here in montreal and it's getting healthier.. and of course, techno and house will always have a following... personally i think that the IDM/breaks mixed with dubstep kinda stuff sounds quite fresh at the moment, but still very underground, although MIA has definitely been flying the flag on the more commercial front... i recently went to see diplo play here, and it was a great night... hip hop/dubstep bootlegs kinda stuff... good shit... actually I've heard some really excellent hip hop since arriving here... very minimal...

when any genre of music gets really popular and a commercial element comes into play, sounds and styles get watered down by pretenders jumping in and can get more popular than say the originators, who have seen their stuff being ripped off and lots of it eventually becomes generic. There is still good music put out but you have to wade through more shit that is shoved in your face.

i still love electro but i dismiss alot of what comes out now because it falls into the generic bin (and has been for years), but i still enjoy the good shit like tyrell, legowelt, blotnik bros, Dynarec, Larry McCormick, still knocking out great tunes

Diplo was involved with the MIA project & whilst I like his style to be fair it has to be said he's on the commercial end of it himself..check his Fabric mix for example.

Grime is tripe in my opinion & to say that the breaks scene in any capacity is 'fresh' is ridiculous it's around since rave days & has progressed in various avenues over the years incorporating a variety of styles along the way.

I'd be very wary of anyone enquiring about 'the next big thing' myself ,who gives a shit do what you want to do there's an audience for everything out there. Are you interested in making music or being part of a scene?

Oh electro's not trendy anymore, what's next..hate that attitude myself music should be enjoyed & appreciated wether it's succesful or not. You're the same guy coming on here claiming Mylo was the best thing you'd heard in a long time only denouncing it months later like all the other sheep. So electro's been absorbed into the mainstream that's just a testament to it's success. But no we can't be seen to be into anything successful now can we.

Like any genre as we all know there's good & bad..seek & ye shall find but to denounce something based on success is ignorant & just shows me that you're more a dedicated follower of fashion than a true music fan.

Can anyone answer his question on whats going to be the next thing to be big?
Minimal has a very moderne/futuristic vibe to it, i personally can see electronic music getting a bit more complicated and trippy like most minimal tracks. I also think the beats will be a bit more advanced and varied, kind of chopped up and shit, straying away from the usual 4/4 kick.
Its hard to say really.

see interstellar fugitive's response above regarding generic electro... it's because it's fashionable that so much shite is being produced

you obviously know nothing about me to tell me that i'm not really a music fan... who the fuck pronounced you the dean?

as for mylo, i liked it when it came out first admittedly... then i saw him live playing guitar over what might as well have been his cd playing... and lost a good bit of respect... then heard 'drop the pressure' 50 million times on the radio, then came the miami sound system bootleg version... as well as the fact that he hasn't done jack shit for years except travel around the world playing drop the pressure as the highlight of his set, and releasing pink ipods with his name on it... so, excuse me, but mylo isn't an artist that i would have a whole lot of time for anymore...

by the way, where did I say that breaks were fresh?

and my last question... does it take effort to build up that amount of bitterness, or does it come naturally?

I wouldnt say minimal is becoming generic like electro, well thats my opinion. sooner or later it will be not just yet. The good thing about minimal though is its sound is more underground than say electro which will make it harder to commercialise, therefore it will last longer in the underground scene.....hopefully.

Its all a matter of opinion really though and how much exposure you have to a particular genre. Those people that say house is dead just got bored with it, where as people discovering house for the first time wouldnt say its dead.

i think its going to go back to really good really deep house. i think minimal is getting generic alright but theing about minimal is classifying it, if villaloboz/hawtin made a house track would you call it minimal just because they made it?? people would but they cant.all that glitchy stuff too is cack, electro lost its name/genre ages ago, i wouldnt call the stuff these days electro, electro i my opinion is classified by the type of beat (think cybotron, africa bambataa) not that horrible bass-y cack thats churned out week in week out.

next big thing.

ketamine house

over the years miminal techno has become alot more acceptable to the ear and to the mainstream. compared to something like Tephra or Master Builder by robert hood, its softer slower and easier on the ear.
