Immigration Thread

Anyone remember playing cops and robbers as kids , in pre PlayStation times , playing different characters from TV ? ... as children we imagined ourselves as adults doing adult things and making adult decisions and as children obviously with no power we imagined we had some and how good it made as feel ? Well Blighe and his buddies perched up in a tent playing grown up characters brings me back to my childhood like nothing else ...

The upcoming referendum is very much going to be a public vote on immigration.

I think they can see which way its going given their increasingly shrill commentary in recent days.

'Dont believe the rumours about migrants' says Martin

'Don't connect migration with crime', says Varadkar

Meanwhile:

2023 Sexual assault court cases involving immigrants:

The list goes on and on. Its clearly a growing problem.

Airheads can rabbit on about Irish emigration in the 1870s but we are starting to experience the same social and crime problems that other European nations have already gone through.

The EU has already begun reforming the law on immigration. Its far beyond time we started properly policing our borders and putting limits and tighter controls in place.

Up to very recently the three big parties were on the same page on migration,
SF are now trying to put distance between themselves and Ff, fg on this.
Thing is neither of those favour completely uncontrolled immigration. What a lot seem to be doing is confusion immigration with those seeking asylum. The latter has exploded in numbers due to various wars which could not be foreseen. No doubt at all that we should be much quicker in finalising applications for asylum and where these are declined removing such people from the country.

You don’t give stats just a load of articles about immigrants and refugees involved in sexual assaults. It would be interesting to know what the statistics say because as you are probably aware immigrants now make up 20% of the population so do they account for 20% of crime or more? And what types of crimes? And should the age profile be factored in? Etc etc

Can’t see the post you’re replying to but as far as I am aware the Gardaí don’t keep crime stats by nationality so it would be completely without evidence for anyone to suggest that crime rates are lower in Irish people v immigrants/refugees.

Its roughly 15% of the population are now non Irish.

Of those put in prison in Ireland in 2022 its about 21% non Irish. Theres no breakdown available of serious crime by nationality.

What we do have is evidence from others jurisdictions where unchecked immigration/asylum has led to sharp spikes in sexual and violent crime. Perhaps you consider Ireland able to buck the trend?

We have an asylum process that has basically collapsed under the number of people applying from safe countries to avoid visa requirements.

As already mentioned 28% of those surveyed recently in a Sunday Independent poll believe immigration is an important election issue.
75% of those surveyed feel we have taken in more refugees/asylum seekers than we can cope with.

To continue wittering on about the notional far right boogeyman and demonising people with legitimate concerns will prove disastrous for the political parties that try to continue to do so. Whether people like it or not its an issue to the fore and one that requires action.
