Cork's Unreliable Bus Service

Makes zero sense. Are you suggesting multiple operators should be running on the same routes because that's what it sounds like. There is no practicality or viability in having Bus Eireann, Go Ahead and say Transdev all running buses on the same route from Carrigaline to Cork for example.

The 208 route gets put out to tender. The 205 stays with Bus Eireann.

The 220, the 214, and perhaps 50% of the routes get put out to tender so that no one company owns 100% of the routes.

Then if somebody goes on strike at least the whole city doesn’t come to a standstill.

Also, the bus station in Parnell Place should be open to all operators, not just Bus Eireann.
 
Using passenger journey statistics issued by the company is not a reliable way to evaluate service levels because the over 66s in this country have free bus travel and this distorts passenger journey numbers as many people over 66 use buses multiple times in the one day because for them it is free travel.

The same sort of thinking from Brussels that broke up the ESB monopoly on power stations.

Contracts are awarded for periods (generally around 7 years) and the operators must meet the criteria laid down or they lose the franchise.

The unions in BE are slowly becoming aware of the implications. Within 5 to 6 years, nobody will care if they go on strike, or not.

The thinking that only the state can run a bus service is coming to a close. Not before time.

It is great actually that this is happening, the Unions in CIE have held this country to ransom for years.

I am only waiting on the Unions in Bus Eireann now to start mouthing off and looking for rises etc as a result of the companies positive results which were in the news yesterday.

The strike in Bus Éireann brought our city to its knees. It can never be allowed to happen again. We need to reduce the leverage the NBRU has over the city.

The strike caused a bit of disruption but people improvised and managed to get about.
