Cork u20 Hurling 2024

People learn, people change. Donal Og did not have a successful time with the minors but hopefully he will have learned from the mistakes he made.
The current senior management team made mistakes last year and some as well this year but what is important is that they are learning from these mistakes.
Donal Og is clearly a very intelligent man, he clearly loves Cork hurling and clearly wants to be involved in management and coaching.
Why not provide him with the opportunity to contribute ?
I don't think we should be closing doors on anyone tbh.
To be fair he had the minors in 2020 so the whole season was disrupted by COVID and it might not be a fair barometer of his abilities

It's a fair comment. Its was very disrupted and they had small groups in at a time with restrictions for a lot of their prep from speaking with players and contacts close to the management.

They picked a lot of u16s that year too, probably too many to be successful that year despite how talented the u16s were. I felt coming in fresh and not having a knowledge of the age group hindered them in identifying their best squad with such a disrupted schedule.

I coached a club team at that age group all the way up and I felt they were some glaring omissions at the time , from looking at some of the players I saw play against our own lads over those years.

However with the passing of time and the success some those u16 players have had, the management have probably been proven right on the balance of things if development was the end goal.

I wouldn't be a fan of Donal Og's manner or punditry. Great player of course and nothing against the man on personal level but pure management wouldn't be a strong point I'd say. He gets too caught up and focused on small trivial stuff.

If he can concentrate on his coaching maybe he'll better. Furlong is strong on the coaching side of things and in Sean Guiheen he has a strong personality and proven winner too. It's an interesting mix. It's not one you would have put together off the top of your head.

Best of luck to all involved.

Guheen is part of the set up too? This will be very interesting 🤣

That is fair comment.

I do however know of one player who was very unimpressed by Donal Og that year.
One? Jesus Christ, if he wasn’t such a high profile pundit he’d never have been seen or heard of again, the year was an unmitigated disaster, fellas on here are now bringing Covid in as an excuse, was there no covid in any other county or something? 🤣🤣🤣

Tadgh Og Murphy and Vincent Hurley too.
That’s a good line up, my point was Sean is a no nonsense type of coach, doesn’t go into too much tactics and stuff, Furlong struck me as the same when he was with the minors, not sure where Tadhg Og or Hurley stand on that but Donal Og over coaches teams to the point that the players individualism is bate out of them.

Hence my things will be interesting comment

They picked a v young team and our current senior sub keeper made two v bad mistakes in minute which gifted Lim 2 goals just before the break which they couldnt pull back.Lets be greatful that that utter dud Meyler hasn't been let near things, a big positive for Cork hurling.

Cork will need to follow a style of more direct hurling just like Pat Ryan advocated at senior level this year and to tell the truth I can't see Donal Og coach a team with this in mind. I sincerely hope I'm wrong!

Selecting the right players will be huge, there are really good players to pick from who never figured much in minor championship for Cork for one reason or the other such as the following:

Brian Nolan, Matt O'Riordan (both Erin's Own), Kieran Cotter (Bride Rovers), Oisin Fitzgerald (St. Catherines), Pete Kelly (Ballincollig), Ethan Buckley (Milford), James O'Callaghan-Maher, Eoin O'Flynn, Charlie Lucas, Cathal Hallihan (all Douglas), Matthew Barrett (Carrigtwohill), Michael O'Driscooll (Watergrasshill), Diarmuid Wall, Stephen Lynam (both Glen Rovers), Calvin O'Donovan (Mayfield), Sean Lombard (Ballinhassig).

Most of the above players should make the squad/extended panel and around 5 should be close to starting.
