Cork to Limerick Motorway

Where could the the money be better spent .
how about all the all the people that have been killed on the road between cork and limerick like the man in butavent before christmas and the person killed today on the limerick side of charleville . do u like to see people been killed on the roads . well maybe kill off a few more pricks in audis and bmws but not fair on everyone else

At that point all you gain by using the old alignment is the avoidance of CPO costs (assuming the land has not been sold on as it often has been).

The railway line between Charleville and Patrickswell no longer exists. Lands were handed back by Irish Rail/CIE to the farmers a while ago. The tracks have been removed as well. All that remains in places are a few bridges over nothing and some double ditches.

The proposed by-pass of Charleville bit of the motorway is a joke. The idea is to remove all the heavy vehicles from going through the town. With all of the large businesses (Kerry Foods) and the industrial estates all on the Kilmalock side of town the idiots in charge deciede to put the new motorway on the opposite side running it on the west of Charleville which means that any deliveries for these companies will have to come off of the motorway and still drive through the town.

In fairness that would involve the widescale cooperation of the Rail Procurment Agency and the NRA as well as a host of other state agencies.

In Ireland that just isn't possible as it would drive costs mad. They'd all want pay rises and handjobs.

From my experience it would be easier to negotiate with the Taliban than with Irish Rail. There a right shower....

Agreed he lived near me (RIP), but surely it can be done cheaper than this. They spent £1million on a stone wall on the Charleville side of Buttevant to widen the road, nothing done in over 12 years.

Whats new here it's designed by engineers in offices in Dublin. Discussions should be held with locals who could advise on some improvements on the proper route to take. Typical engineers never listen to the people who'll actually have to use it. Look at the South Ring Rd, loads of traffic at rush hour cause no flyovers over Sarsfield and Bandon Rd roundabouts. Probably wait ten years so that it'll cost €40 million more than if it had been built initially

You are talking through your hoop there lad. The Design Team have been based in Mallow for nearly two years now and working exclusively on this project. They have been meeting landowners all during that time as well. There were numerous public displays of the project, in fact there were 4 such displays in the Charleville Park Hotel alone over that period.

If this project was being designed out of an office in Dublin as you put it, then it would take closer to 4-5 years to get to the stage where they are now after 2 years.

I rest my case Mong

The South Ring Road was initially designed (in the 70s/80s) with flyovers at Kinsale Road and, I think, at Bandon and Sarsfield Road but due to a lack of funding roundabouts were horsed in there. The detailed designs for the latter two have certainly been done for a number of years now but again no funding is coming through so they won't get built. It's not the design team's fault if langball politicians won't allocate money to sort out those junctions. They'd rather build a motorway to Waterford, a road that has lower traffic levels at some points than the N71.

I remember going to see public displays for the Cork North Ring Road about four years ago now... we were told at the time the road would be open around 2011. All it is now is just another plan sitting on a shelf somewhere.
