Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Fantastic achievement to come up with a performance like that with a six day turnaround. Of course Tipp were more composed as a unit because they had way more time to prepare for this. I’d rather have our problems than theirs though. Seven goals conceded in two games and they made Deccie look like Usain Bolt. Shane Barrett offers so much. He’ll need minding by management because of a lack of accuracy no doubt and he may have to face being dropped now but what heart he has and we’ve been crying out for that for years. Would love to see the last ten minutes of the game again particularly.

It happened again this week lads, the free hogggie took and missed just before half time Dalton had the ball in his hand to take it and hoggie over ruled him. Will he just put the team first and let Dalton take them. Its costly lads
Did it? I missed that! It was just outside the 65 if I remember correctly and I’d say the plan was Hoggy from 65 in and Decky from outside the 65 so lines were probably blurred on who should take it.

Look we are blessed to have two guys who are top class free takers, especially Deccie on the long ones, which are much harder to convert, but they are effortlessly going yards over the bar

Not sure I would prefer our failings to theirs to be honest...we scored 4 great goals and could only manage to draw

Are you serious?? Honestly. Crazy statement. Shots about 6 yards out
Watched the full match back when I got home. Collins did an awful lot right, including that great save at the end from Callanan, but I agree that especially for the second goal he needed to stay big (as they say) - instead he went down really early and made the goal big. First goal doesn't look great either but more bad defending than goalkeeping- think Rob Downey impeded Collins vision ( a lot further than 6 yards out btw).

What a match! Tipp will feel very disappointed they couldn’t see it out. Here are some positives and negatives for me.

Negatives

1. Robbie O’Flynns injury. He’ll be a massive loss for the last few games if he’s out.

2. Defending for both goals could have been much better. Cork were very open at times.

3. Until we moved to 3 man full forward line a lot of the ball that went in went straight back to the Tipp sweeper.

4. Some of the newer lads did not not play well.

Positives

1. Scored 4 goals (even if 2 of them should have been disallowed)

2. The subs that came on made a big difference. Good to see Tim O’Mahony back and Brian Hayes score a goal on his Championship debut.

3. Refused to be beaten. Even going 5 points down at several stages we never let Tipp get too far ahead (Tipp wides contributed). We showed unbelievable heart and character to get a result.

4. Still unbeaten. Although we’d prefer 4, 3 points after 2 matches is not bad going at all.

5. Stronger panel. Saw a poster say we’ve now played 24 lads in the first two rounds. There is genuine competition for places now.

6. Deccie Dalton. I’ve doubted him and said if he proved me wrong I’d say it. He certainly did yesterday!

7. Patrick Collins. Made a massive intervention at the end. Much maligned but he’s done well the last 2 weeks.

I haven’t seen a match that good in a long long time. It was tough, skilful and both have their very most to win. Even if the referee tried to spoil it! The atmosphere was unbelievable with a big crowd. I for one wouldn’t complain if we met them again later in the championship!

I was at match, in line with the two Cork goals at the end, and was convinced both were square balls. However, watching back on gaago, neither were - two great and fair goals. Admittedly Robbies first half goal did involve a lot of steps...

I feel good this morning, we have a new breed of player who have a never say die attitude and we have more experienced players to keep us cool calm and collected.

But we have things to work on

1 - tactically we were all over the place, push up man on man and take the opposition on, Tipp had the comfort zone of having spare men in defence all day long

2 - our team is still not settled but we are getting there, we have used 24 players in 2 games and there’s probably another half dozen who could see game time yet. Plus there’s no one I’d be saying has to be dropped

3 - Tim O Mahony has to start the next day but I’m not sure will it be midfield or wing foward, I really think he could transform our game at 12 playing the same role Deccie does. If Tim starts Sean Twomey must come into the 26

4 - We didn’t look like scoring goals v Waterford bar Brian Roches chance but by god we had loads of chances last night. If we can get more clinical these goals will win us games

5 - prepare now for Clare, win and we are qualified, but Clare will need the win too. We must get our team right, Clare are a big physical unit with two top class shooters from the middle third in Kelly and McCarthy. Close them down and don’t leak goals and we will win. It will be some game of hurling though

Loved his energy and body language just oozed "we're not losing this one" as soon as he set foot on the field. I know he has his faults but Cork need a visibly passionate player like him. He's big too and gets physical. You could see the team lifting after he came on.
Also his point and interplay with Kingston for Hayes goal was of the highest quality.

I said it at half time and I’ll say it again, these guys are full of guts, how we dragged ourselves back into that game is beyond me given how lethargic we were throughout the game bar the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes.

We have a serious issue at half foward with a lack of a ball winning no 12, there is no structure to our team on that side of the pitch, that’s not me having a go at Shane Barrett who does a lot of good work around the middle, but we need a second Deccie Dalton type on the wing and I’m suprised the selectors haven’t rectified it yet.

Tactically we were beaten on the line tonight, last week against Waterford we went man on man on their puckouts and we squeezed the life out of them, tonight we backed off Tipp and gave them free reign in their defence both from puckouts and general play. Just push up and mark a man and back ourselves to win the battles.

We picked up a draw and now a win in Ennis or Limerick will see us through, I think we’ll get it

Patrick Collins had a good game but these short puckouts are annoying me, obviously not all down to him but they have to stop

Niall O Leary had.a tough hour but he stood up and never shirked responsibility, fair play to him

Damien Cahalane again had a fine solid game and is the leader of that backline. It won’t stop the negativity from the usual quarters but I have two words for them, fuck ye

Ger Millerick was game again today, never shirked a tackle, but his hurling leaves him down in tight spaces and is more suited to wing back

Robert Downey was switched to right half back today, why? He should be left at 7 unless he was man marking a Gearoid O Connor, which he wasn’t. Was quiet today but is a big player for us in so many ways

Ciaran Joyce did not have one of his better games today, he’s always willing and brave and made some spectacular catches but his distribution was poor. He needs to stop coming short to the 21 for short puckouts too, like what the fuck is that all about?

Eoin Downey was dissapointing for me but we have to remember this was his first championship start and he will learn alot from it but starting him at wing back when all his Senior experience is at full back was baffling to me

Brian Roche was poor tonight, like the rest of them he was ponderous and looked a little off the pace. Man of the match last week so he has money in the bank in my view

Tommy O Connell moving to midfield was again baffling considering all year he has played at 5 and sometimes 6 but never midfield. Again he was game and hardy but not involved in the play enough

Declan Dalton, what a player and what a man this guy is, he’ll never make an inter county player ye said, he’ll never make an inter county wing foward ye roared, well here ye are lads, the wing foward we have been crying out for for the last 5 years was under our noses all the time. And I won’t even start on his free taking ability. By far our man of the match tonight

Darragh Fitz started very promisingly and looked like he would do damage but he faded out of the game after getting a massive hit, which I thought should have been a red. Not sure an authordox no 11 role suits him although he had a stormer there last week

Shane Barrett was a mirror image of himself from last week, very industrious, very clever but very wasteful when shooting. He brings value to the team but not as a 12 for me

Robbie O Flynn started like he was going to run riot and contributed nicely on the scoreboard but my heart sank when he went off injured. Any word on what it was? Hopefully not the ankle again

Patrick Horgan was quiet enough tonight but kept the scoreboard ticking over, was very very unlucky not to get a goal in the second half. I thought we could have tried Padraig Power instead of him with 15 minutes to go

Seamus Harnedy had a fine game, the guy is a warrior, always has been, if only he was 5 years younger

Shane Kingston looked lively when he came on fir Robbie and really stretched Tipp with his pace and contributed well on the scoreboard. His workrate needs to improve though, at one stage in the second half he let a Tipp player waltz past him unchallenged

Conor Lehane had a fine game when introduced and also contributed on the scoreboard. A much questioned player who is giving his all for the cause

Luke Meade done ok when he came on, I don’t think he should have been dropped anyway as he is the cool calm head we need alongside Brian Roche

Tim O Mahony done well when introduced and thundered into the game in the last 10 minutes scoring a fantastic point. I’m still non the wiser where is his best position but surely he’s got to be looked at at 12?

Brian Hayes, the man ye said should have stuck with the footballers as he’d never make the hurling. And the man I got ridicule for labelling him as a big game player with a sprinkling of magic dust, well ye all saw that magic dust tonight lads!
As before your analysis is very good.
We marked their backs on Waterford puck outs but did not do so yesterday.
Both Downeys (I’m a fan) were too relaxed on the ball. Eoin found the step up challenging but he’ll come good.
SOD will make a difference.
CJ is still learning but is also part of our future.
For all her effort TOC is not in our 15 best players.
TOM must start.
The old guys still have something to offer.
The timing of changes was excellent.
There’s great bottle in this team.
Next year’s champions?
