Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Great interview in the Examiner with Kieran Kingston. Easy for us posters to sit here and criticise but you have to have the upmost respect for fellas to take on that role. You can see how much it meant to him from reading through it.

Edit: link below

I have nothing but the utmost respect for Kieran Kingston and his commitment to Cork, but you can’t give fellas a free pass when they allowed what happened last year happen. Any selectors that set up their team the way we did last year will get constructively criticised and rightfully so

I wasn’t saying people shouldn’t criticise R&B was just pointing out that it wasn’t true a lack of effort or trying. Tried something he felt would work and it didn’t of course people can critique and add comments sure that’s what we all do. That’s what I’ve also done, just wanted to highlight the article really as I thought it was a great read

Fair point, he put his life and soul into making us better but at the end of the day we were in disarray this year. I really hope in 2023 that Pat Ryan returns us to our traditional values of hard work, fast hurling and a never say die attitude, they are missing way too long

I think the idea that there are players undiscovered or unused by Cork hurling selectors is incorrect.
Do you honestly believe a player of the calibre of Brian Moylan of Glen Rovers never deserved the chance to play inter-county?

When Stephen Murphy of Blackrock gave an excellent display in a league game in Croker why was he dropped off the panel completely? We saw similar with Midleton's Aidan Ryan a few years earlier.

James O'Flynn is a prime example of being unused, he was on the panel/extended panel 3 years of Kieran Kingston's second term of 4 years and got little game time.

The fiasco v Galway in this years championship regarding selection has enough coverage without me going into detail

I think in general the best players are selected and in particular the players best suited to the step up in standard.
The words 'in general' is a broad term and while you are correct in this statement the selection of players has to be far more proficient. Cork have a problem across the spectrum at all levels starting with U-14 that filters all the way up to senior. I've highlighted these issues regarding the U-15 mentors and then we're reading a balderdash article of Eamonn Murphy on yesterday's Echo regarding next years U-16's which is in denial of reality. The biggest farce this year was the treatment of Stephen Lynam and Ben Heffernan (both Glen Rovers) by the Cork Minor management and County Board respectively. Although Cork hurling received a boost from capturing the AI Minor title in 2021 for which the management deserved praise, it still begs the question how John Ahern and Paul Flynn (both Dungourney) didn't make the panel?
We saw four players brought into the squad two years ago and none really made the step up. Cork selectors and management probably go to more games than anybody and are more acutely aware of what is needed than anyone as they work with elite hurlers all the time.
There are players added to the inter-county squads every year for other guys who are dropped or left the panel. In selecting the 4 you refer was their judgement correct? Midleton's Cormac Beausang stood out in Midleton's county championship victory and was one of the few who performed decently v Kilmallock but wasn't included in KK's squad, it's good news that Pat Ryan has him currently included.

Corkonion.
Agree with you on the underage. There are players dropped off that U15 panel when the u16 was picked that are better than players retained. I understand that some of the lads dropped were given training programmes for S&C and some were not. I hate undermining coaches etc. but John Meyler is not the man for U16. Talk to the parents of the u15’s last year and he practically ignored the North/ East panel. He travelled with the CityWest to all their games and showed absolute favouritism to them. A lot of the u15’s got very fed up. He even had a set of proper Red Cork jerseys and they travelled with the City West panel. Parents were well pissed off when u talked to them. I heard recently that Donal Mulcahy is not involved any longer. Not sure if that is true or not. He seemed to be far fairer about it but it seems John M was the head guy and that was the end of it. If cork want to be the best, then there has to be a fair chance given to all on the underage panels. People have said that John M shows huge favouritism to the big city clubs. Don’t know if true or not but on the face of it, it certainly did seem to be the case.

Anybody ever heard of Padraig O'Sullivan? He's Meylers right hand man but nobody knows who he is or even what club he is with.

Don't think Cork are as far away as some people here say. Realistically outside of Limerick, on Cork's day they're as good if not better than every other county. Threw away the game against Galway, who nearly beat Limerick. I'm looking forward to seeing what 2023 has in store.

I have never been involved with a Cork hurling management team and I can't say why certain players are not included and why certain players are brought in but not used.
I do know from experience as both player and mentor that different managers prefer different players or maybe different types of players.

Players can be brought in and even though they may be very good club players they may lack that extra bit for inter County.

During most players club careers there will usually be at least two or three inter County managers and if none of them include the player then I think an obvious conclusion can be drawn.

Any manager will want the best talent available to him , why would he exclude a player that he thinks might contribute, it makes no sense.

Cork weren’t far away from Galway and certainly they weren’t in complete disarray as per other posters. Management stumbled upon a team that allowed them to be combative and disciplined as the Waterford game showed. Most Galway supporters would of come away recognising it was a chance they didn’t deserve.

Limerick are by far and away the best team in the competition and probably one of the best ever.

I’d be slightly concerned for Cork in that we couldn’t agree on a
,3,6,11,14 if we all tried given the disparity amongst our players.

For me a major challenge will be if we can get out of Munster. I don’t see us winning an all Ireland next year so would hope for a 2 year plan.
