Cork Hurlers - Part 2

It seems a big coincidence that Bonner is gone and now there’s talk of Waterford not happy with Cahill. In my mind he’s done well and he could have taken the tipp job last year but chose to stick with Waterford. Obviously someone not happy with him.

I’m in Waterford on hols for the week and been asking a few fellas what’s the story about Cahill and why they’d be thinking of getting rid of him now. Most are at a loss to the recent rumours and are happy with him and seem to put the blame on the players being inconsistent rather than a management failure but a few were saying Derek McGrath is looking to get back on board again?

The problem in Waterford is that players think they are better than the are. Arrogance maybe but they have a history of going behind managers backs and unsettling them.

It amazing how people have tinted memories. Ger Cunningham was the best goalkeeper over a long period and I rememeber them all back to Paddy Barry.
Paddy Barry..... Could be brilliant but could be awful as well. Brilliant in 1970, shocking in 72 and against Waterford in 74.
Martin Coleman.... Great puck of a ball but not a great shopstopper bar the one against wexford. Never rated him.
Tim Murphy.... Enough said..not up to intercounty standard and often hit balls out for 65 becuase he didnt have the skills or strength to burst out.
Ger Cunningham..... way ahead of the previous keepers. I only remember him dropping a ball once against limerick in 85 or 87. Great puckout and great shopstopper.
Donal Og Cusack...... was good in 99 behind a strong mean defence but really didnt have a lot to do. 2001 to 2004 I thought he was shocking and always made some major errors. He wasnt a shot stopper and hadnt a great puckout. However from 2006 on he got scientific and improved his game and modernised goalkeeping in fairness. But Fitzhenry and Cummin were way ahead. Prbably on a par with Davy.
Martin Coleman. Unlucky imo and way better than his father
ANthony Nash... I dont know what to make of Nash. He was a good shotstopper and had a great puck as we know. However I cant figure out if it was his fault or the defence that we seemed to leave in 3 and 4 goals on numerous occasion
Collins: I think he is at where cusack was in 2004. He needs to work a lot on his game.
I agree with you on Ger Cunningham being the best but believe you are underating Martin Coleman. Coleman's shot stopping didn't come down to the one v Wexford, firstly he made 2 brilliant saves that day one of them was blown back for a free but I wonder if it hit the back of the net would it have been blown in view of the Wexford protests. Also Coleman made numerous saves v Tipp in 1976 and if Cork lost that game which AFAIR they only won by a point the 3 in a row wouldn't have come about, he was also excellent v Limerick in the 1975 Munster final although Cork won handy. Coleman wore contact lenses during his playing days and he's only 5' 7" tall as a result his handling mainly fetching of high balls was his main weakness compared to Cunningham and Cusack who were 6' plus.

Interestingly some years back John Horgan wrote an article in the Echo comparing Coleman & Cusack and he gave a tentative vote to Cusack as being the better 'keeper. I believe Ger Cunningham wasn't mentioned because Horgan took for granted he was the best. We all remember Cunningham's save v Clare in 1998 and the one v Galway in the 1990 AI final but for me one save that stands out was v Limerick in the Munster semi-final replay in the Pairc in 1983 from Frankie Nolan in the dying seconds, if it went in it was curtains for Cork. After making the save Cunningham was coolness personified in rising the sliotar and clearing his lines, it was a far better save than Cusack's one v KK from Henry Shefflin in the 2004 AI final which made huge headlines.

Irish Examiner will be a priced streaming model this year. I was disappointed at first when I saw the per game streaming cost but all in all not a bad deal when paying monthly. Hopefully they will show even more games this year. They will show 5 games across the first two weekends.

There will be an €8 pay-per-view charge per game this season for followers seeking one-time access, or you may prefer our sizzling summer subscription offer for the Irish Examiner’s entire suite of content – including daily ePaper, GAA live streams, podcasts and acclaimed sports writing – for a stunning €5 per month, or €50 for 12 months.

Anyone else just pissed today off that yet another year goes by without An All Ireland. Look at how well KK did yesterday. Sick of it, we're too fucking nice in Cork. Could barely watch that match yesterday. Is it just me or is hurling at Intercounty level becoming boring?

They are saying yesterday was one of the Greatest All Ireland’s but for drama was it any better than Cork v Kilkenny in 99’ when it finished 13 points to 12? Not sure if the abundance of scoring is a good thing personally. Definitely not the 100 yard frees becoming expected more than expectation these days!
