Cork Footballers

Yes, someone else will get an opportunity now that Jack has chosen only hurling. The problem is we start squads in Cork at U14 and most of the lads on these squads are dual players, by the time we get to minor we could have on a football squad 6 or 7 lads who also play inter county hurling as well, and if those lads chose hurling we have deprived other lads close to inter county level of being part of a squad all the way up and building up S & C etc.
All well and good winning Minor & U20 All Irelands but if a percentage of these lads are going hurling after not only are we losing them but we have deprived other young footballers a lot of development.
Remember a young lad at 13/14/15/16/17 in Cork will play around 10 competitive club matches a year, is this enough to develop top class footballers? No concsedience thatmost of the teams at the top of division 1 & 2 and winning All Irelands are prodomantly football counties.
I didn't realise the extent to which potential footballers are being deprived of these opportunities at ages younger than under-17. Yes, that problem would have to be addressed too.

You make a very good point about the number of competitive club games. And of course this does hinder development of their football. And hinders a lot of other things too for players that will never make it to elite level - I know of some (under 21s) who got two matches this year and they are finished for the year!

Interesting snap shot - 8 players, all were top end players of their age group and just out of minor/21 - 2 (25%) imo made a tangible contribution at Senior Football for Cork, Maguire & White. We wasted Corks time on some of the others for varying reasons imo. Others we effective at Junior IC level & for their clubs. Others got caught between the 'dual stool'.

What it does go to show is the absolute need for correct talent identification to be done at that age point, have the right people carrying out continuous monitoring ensuring guys the selected possess and maintain the required attitude and are committed to the process of wanting to become an ELITE SPORTSMAN, no half arsed attitudes tolerated - that will keep a steady flow of players coming through - atm a 100% of zero is zero.

'The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights...'
The current thinking behind sport development is to delay specialisation as long as possible and keep the door open for players for as long as possible. The Roger Federer model as opposed to the Tiger Woods model. This is well covered by David Epstein's book range

Ross Tucker has the head of coaching at sport England on. They have stopped specialisation for u16s and are picked up players dropped by other underage elite setups

I don't know enough about Cork GAA structures but it makes you think about all the reasons a young player would select one over the other or go play rugby or soccer. Coaching, training facilities, enjoying it, Prospect of sucess . Worth a listen anyway

This feeds into your point about continuous monitoring.

Yes, by all means keep all doors open, my point if 15 year olds are on a hurling development squad he is getting all the extra training and S & C he needs, if these lads are also on the football squad other players are losing out altogether as each squad can only accomadate so many.

Agreed - and if he's on both he gets more than is good for him.

Albeit I have mixed views on county-wide development squads and those ages for a county as big as Cork. Regional may be more practical in terms of travel time, and may also be better for lessening highs and lows of status which naturally accrues from being on the squad. But then I suppose the GAA is also competing with other sports for the most capable youngsters, and so status is prematurely dangled (pity for those youngsters - hard to solve that one).

I don't think you can't make a lad choose at 14 to play football or hurling for a Cork career and I also disagree that a dual player is going to deprive other lads simply because the developments squads at 14 and 16 are regional and should be big enough to cover 2 or 3 lads from each squad opting for one code over another later
Each squad with not churn out 30 IC players for minor so I can't see how a lad will lose out if the squad if someone opts for hurling. There are enough places in each development squad.

I think the point is that if a 14 year old is on both development squads, he's taking away a spot from another 14 year old who could be on one or the other squad, which means that Cork is developing one player that will ultimately have to choose one code as an adult anyway instead of 2.

What West Awake is advocating for is that both 14 year olds pick one Cork development squad, and play both codes with their clubs. In that way, they are both getting specialist S&C, technical, and tactical training, and they both get to play both codes, and maybe later if they decide to change, they can...and Cork might get two players out of it.

Lads bottom line is the Cork county board need to start making it more attractive to opt in for the footballers.

Take a lead from Kerry, Dublin etc. There needs to be an under the table payment system in place. Every player should have a nice motor put under him and a bit of cash in the pocket.

Obviously this will have an upfront cost but you could get buy in from local businesses so that being a Cork footballer feels like a privilege e.g vip entry into secret garden for all players, free food from Lennox’s etc.

It might even entice the Harlem Globetrotters of Cork football to return to the fold 😀😀😀
