I'm happy to stand over everything I've said. The school owns all those things.Clearly not
Current situation is abhorrent. 12 clubs sharing a single track 5 nights a weekTop posting El G, your insight and knowledge of athletics in this county is a very welcome addition to this forum.
Interesting enough I'll have to take your word over those who are in the know in Athletics that also train in MTU.Incorrect, it's MTU and cork County athletics board. No direct funding from City Council for that track.
What Olympic Athletes from cork are you referring to?
we had three this year. Nicola Tuthill? from Bandon her Dad had to build her a hammer cage.
Sophie O'Sullivan? Has never trained in cork.
Phil Healy? from Bandon, trains in Waterford.
Maybe you mean Derval O'Rourke?5 or somebody trained exclusively in Dublin from when she was a junior.
Michelle Finn?, Made 2 Olympics. Trained in the mardyke but left for Dublin before her first Olympics.
UCC closed their track and won't fix it because they don't have to. They can let it sit. A publicly owned track could not do that.
MTU did the same last year to build a gym it was closed for 2 years
1000s of kids with nowhere to train..Its a huge infrastructure deficit.
Imagine if 6 GAA club had to share same facilities, they're would be uproar. Hopefully the feel good factor after the Olympics continues through to funding.Current situation is abhorrent. 12 clubs sharing a single track 5 nights a week
up to 120 kids ranging in age from 7 to 17 all training together because there is very little choice. Clubs are doing well facilitating each other but Its very difficult.
My "beef" as you put it is that your initial point was that the pupils of a school in one of the most deprived areas in the Country enjoy facilities far above those of the private schools of the City.I'm happy to stand over everything I've said. The school owns all those things.
The Principal is responsible for all those things. He may not want to be because he is a Principal and not a Sports Hall Manager but he does.
The complex is run by Paul O'Leary, he handles day to day staffing etc. He also runs a separate TaeKwondo school both within Mayfield and in Upper glanmire I think
The school has access for PE of course they do. they own it.
It has gone from about 900 pupils to less than 300 since the 90s. If it approaches those numbers with the additional capitation money that would come with it they could afford even more access.
You are right financially the complex and school are both struggling. I'd say without Dolphin block booking it, it'd be shuttered.
The school has mega potential is my basic point. I don't understand your beef.
I'm friendly with both staff of the school and the complex. I use the facility weekly and can see how underutilised it is.
But work away. Keep telling me how wrong I am about a point I haven't made
Phil is from Enniskeane. Where do you think she trains when she's home?Interesting enough I'll have to take your word over those who are in the know in Athletics that also train in MTU.
Tuthill, trained and competed in MTU for the City Sports this year as did Sophie O Sullivan and Phil Healy.
Tuthill and Healy from what I'm told still use the facility along with Bandon/Waterford and other facilities. O Sullivan gone foreign again I believe
There's countless other athletes in America/Europe on Scholarships who use MTU when home for Summer/Christmas.
Below Healy also states she will train there.
Healy guest of honor to re-open the track that closed for resurfacing works not to build a gym as per articles.
MTU suffered same issues as Mardyke as regards their surface, UCC as you said are leaving it sit. MTU didn't close to build a gym and they couldn't sit on it due to external reasons such as public money as per article. Some of which is Large Scale Funding and then upkeep I believe is also split between County and City Councils.

MTU track reopens just in time for Cork City Sports
Following resurfacing works that were “years in the making”, according to Munster Technological University president Maggie Cusack, the track at the ...www.echolive.ie
So are you disputing the article?
On Mardyke as I said simple solution to get another track in Cork - become a public private partnership. It's a simple solution.
West Cork/MTU/Waterford/Clonmel I would imagine.Phil is from Enniskeane. Where do you think she trains when she's home?
Tuthill is going ton UCD now in think
She is based in WIT because that is where her coach is from.
MTU track was closed due to damage arising from building the big basketball arena, then they missed a weather window and mondo the installers moved one until the following summer.
No money came from the council it was the large scale capital grant from central government.
2 tracks won't meet demand. Every club has a waiting list.
you understand City Sports is a competition and that athletes need to train outside of competition?
Ask your friend if he thinks two tracks are sufficient to meet demand in the city.West Cork/MTU/Waterford/Clonmel I would imagine.
No from what I'm told and the articles the Track wasn't touched or damaged during the building of the Arena Gym and the Track was open as normal during the building and post opening of said building. The track closed then for resurfacing and they missed a weather window as you say then which extended the closure. It's Ireland contingency plans should have been in place for the weather.
The issue with MTU is the same issue UCC is now suffering from - fact.
Tracks are to be replaced every 10 year or so, how long was the MTU/RTC track open for before they had to close for resurfacing? I say over 10 years. You might know more.
I will credit you, you do know a lot but you're off the mark here and how I know as I've friends in the know those who train out in MTU because in the build up to the Olympics and post Rome success I was interested and still interested in Athletics so was chatting more to the buddy about it.
Yes I know the City Sports is a competition and hence I said they trained and competed there.
Again my friend in know has said money from both Councils is granted to MTU for upkeep/maintenance and from attending the City Sports back in July the City Council and County Council are one of main sponsors of that event.
