Anyone living in Passage West?

Previous thread was very helpful, but I wonder if there is anyone living in Passage that could tell me how is it REALLY like living there.
I only (unfortunately) heard bad things about the place, had a stroll in the village and to be honest wasn't really much impressed either.
But I do not live there, and maybe I am missing out on something.

We saw a lovely house which we were thinking to put an offer on, it's very close to the Maulban estate, and even the estate agent (living herself in Passage) told us, commenting on Maulban "Every town has its dodgy areas" ... not really reassuring (did she really wanted to sell??) as we have a young kid, that if we buy there would probably end up going into the primary school in front of that estate....

Then there is the high cancer rate...
People talking about drugs...

If you didn't know/ wouldn't live in the area, you'd probably end up having loads of doubts about Passage, as we do ....
It would be nice to hear some positive things about the place...

Also, what about traffic?

Thanks!

I know Passage West very well, and have a great affection for the place, but I would never, ever live there. I've seen it change over my lifetime, and it's gotten bigger, but not better.

It has its nicer points, yes (I've always enjoyed the walks down the line) but not enough to compensate for the rest of it.

If you move there from Kinsale you'll slit your wrists.

Seriously. Do you want to live there?

I was born and raised in Passage West and loved it. I looked at houses there but ended up buying where my partner is from but would like to have kept living there.
The town centre is run down because of the high vacancies which is a problem all over the country but I found that Passage isn't centred on the town itself.
Most of the residents do their shopping and socialising in Douglas or Cork. The schools, GAA and soccer pitches are all on the edge of the town.
All the estates around Maulbaun are really nice and there are some lovely people in Maulbaun itself.
I think the town, situated on the Harbour, is going to improve over the next 5 - 10 years. There were plans to completely open up the town onto the water with new apartments and a boardwalk etc and that could still happen in the future.
It's also sandwiched between Rochestown and Monkstown which are really nice areas.

I thought the high cancer rate was Cobh. Either way those statistics are often just anomalies. Your own lifestyle determines whether you'll get cancer not the town you live in.

Can't say much about traffic as I haven't lived there for a while but there is a build up in Rochestown to get onto the South Ring Road.

1. They were saying that 15 years ago.

2. Not even that town's location in line with the prevailing winds from nearby industrial factories?

The reality is that any town with a high population density has increased cancer levels.
I know the people of Cobh complained about their higher cancer rates which they blamed on the toxic dump in Haulbowline.
However the Cancer Registry body did a study and confirmed they had a higher cancer rate. However they said that any similar sized town as Cobh will have increased cancer levels.

spent a large part of my life in Passage and I couldn't say I would be running back, it seems to be a town that reaped the worst the celtic tiger had to offer, lots of nama-esq estates and a few ghost estates to boot!

if you're not into the GAA or Soccer there isn't much of a social scene, the town has always, in my memory at least, been dirty, run down and devoid of any real character, lots of lovely people living there but a general lack of ambition to move the place along, on paper it should be a beautiful sea side town like Aghada or Crosshaven but never seemed to transcend the industrial, working class past

if it were me I would be looking more to Monkstown or Crosshaven

Passage West always gave me the impression that, in the post-apocalyptic housing estates outside the town, there are young men with double digit IQs doing utterly monstrous things to cats and small dogs. And these young men have ambitions beyond mere fauna.
