Abortion law/US..

Sure thing, mick.

What you posted is true. But in the last half century since Roe v Wade was passed, while the Republicans have pretended that they wanted to repeal it, they too have had similar majorities on several occasions. They have also, on even more occasions, had the power to shut down or threaten to shut down the government over this issue had they wished, as they have done on other occasions over tax cuts and such. The thing is, they have been claiming that abortion is their top issue for decades, but they have never acted like it in fact.

The reason is that a large majority of people favor at least some abortion rights. But more importantly to the Party, the non-resolution of the abortion issue has allowed them to lock in a lot of “single issue” voters who would not otherwise vote for their rotten policies.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, given that the GOP was never really serious before about repealing Roe v Wade, there was a host of other things they could have done to decrease abortion. These are the social reforms that people mention when they claim that Republicans are “pro-birth” rather than “pro-life”. They did none of these things.

It’s much easier to call people baby killers in order to take the moral high ground rather than mobilizing all the MANY things that would have to be done (and would still have to be done) to actually reduce the American abortion rate. And while the outright banning of abortion will probably reduce abortions for the poor who can’t hop in their cars and go to a Blue state or our neighboring countries, it’s not going to really prevent a lot of abortions. And the Republicans know this.

Finally, for now, one needs to bring up the fact that abortion the banning of abortion is only the beginning of a list of retrogressive actions that many if not most Red states are planning. They are already looking to attempting to ban contraceptives and to roll back gay rights. (Naturally they are not looking to ban divorce, which is the one thing in all of this mess that Christ actually, firmly, and unambiguously addressed). There is an entire retrogressive social program going on here, as the Right is sailing with a fascist nationalist wind under the guise of what they claim is Christianity.

Excellent post, Dr.. Obama was indecisive but he had a majority for a very short period of time and spent the entirety of it trying to get some Republicans to support Obamacare. Ted Kennedy died and that was that. Republicans have for the last 30 years pretended to care about abortion but have done next to nothing about it (similarly Democrats have claimed to be pro gun violence reform but have done little about it). Now however there is a different beast running the show on the R side. There is a mix of evangelical loonies and white Christian fascists who are not only very dangerous for America but very dangerous for the world. If Biden had lost to Trump then this group of fasco-evangelicals would be calling the shots on the Ukraine war right now and Vlad would be wantonly looking at the rest of eastern Europe. Abortion is just the beginning for this court.

The US is a messed up place, divided equally between nut job red necks with their guns and bibles and woke liberals with their doomsday rhetoric. We're looking at a possible breakup of the Nation one day but untill that day we have to put up with the lot of them. You could say both sides are made for each other because they both are so extreme.

Imagine being a doctor and refusing to abort a baby even though it will kill the woman if you don't.

Oh wait, that actually happened. Another nonsensical argument by you
Imagine a doctor treating a patient with advanced cancer. The patient is enrolled in a trial for novel chemotherapy. She goes into remission. Then she becomes pregnant which is an exclusion criterion for the clinical trial. So she has to stop taking the chemotherapy. Her cancer gets progressively worse. She gives birth to the baby but by now the cancer is so advanced that she is terminal and unfortunately passes away.

This happened in Cork before the repeal the 8th referendum. Now I’m not saying what’s right or what’s wrong, I’m merely trying to highlight some of the medical ethics issues at play in this debate.
If this lady had been able to have have an abortion she would most likely be alive today.
