2023 Senior A hurling

I've expressed similar views. Developing coaches should be as much a priority for clubs as developing players.

Perhaps a rule requiring coaches to sit out for 96 weeks if they want to transfer to another club might address the issue?
It might, or alternatively, it might stifle someone who has the potential to make it as a top coach but just isn't getting a chance at his own club. He either has to grin and bear it, or else be out of the game for two years

I think clubs are their own worst enemy here.....They bring in an external coach, paying them large sums of money, but very rarely is there any knowledge transfer from the paid coach to the club coaches.....

The counterpoint is that clubs paying for outside coaches could also be stifling someone who may have potential to be a top coach.

I coach at my kids GAA club, don't get paid, but am a member of a different GAA club.

If you believe outside coaches in clubs are doing it without payment you are very much deluded my friend. In no way are they "volunteers".
I’ll give ya that.

Do ya not think the smaller clubs would be hugely disadvantaged? The big clubs will likely have lads who have been in high performance environments in abundance. I could name 5 or 6 right now who could do a job in Sars. What about the small fish like of St Itas, Harbour Rovers, Glen etc who wouldn’t have access to lads year in year out?

Good point.
I could see myself in the same position.
Some sort of exemption may be required for such a scenario.
The aim of my proposal is to restrict "mercenary" coaches somewhat.
It will obviously need finessing!

The GAA won't do nothing as they don't even accept coaches are being paid. The ould "expenses" catch all.
We had a fair few mercenaries down here that went to other counties for the big bobs, none of which curbed Kiely's development (unfortunately) in Limerick ;)

I guess smaller clubs would indeed have a smaller pool to pick from than the big clubs.

The same is true with regards to players though.

The smaller clubs would at least not be disadvantaged against similar sized clubs who they are most likely to be competing.

What I have in mind is a system similar to players moving between clubs.

It's not a fully formed proposal yet. Just throwing it out there for discussion really.

Probably. It would need to be put forward and passed at convention I presume.

I just don't like the practice of coaches being paid in an otherwise largely volunteer organisation. Particularly in clubs.
