2023 Premier SHC

Anyone thinking the standard of hurling is superior in the modern game should have been at the 4 games in the Pairc last weekend, watched from Rebels online or just the Sars v Rockies on TG4 Sunday which was an eyesore. Newcestown v Killeagh was also very poor, Imokilly v Douglas a mis-match and we saw a decent 1st half between Charleville and the 'Barrs.

I agree Corkonian. The games this weekend in HQ were poor. However I think overall we’ve had a very good club championship. I’ve been to games from Senior down to Junior A since the start of August and have been impressed with the skill levels, physicality and intensity, relative to the grade in question.

However I think playing quarter finals in the Pairc is no good for contests. Small crowds make it feel like you’re playing in an empty stadium and this has a big effect on the quality of the game.

I saw some good games such as Charleville v Fr. O'Neill's and Newtown v Kanturk in those smaller venues than the Pairc but the quality is still questionable and the wides count far too high. Sars v Kanturk was a poor game in Fermoy and the large venue didn't effect Sars when they defeated the 'Barrs. No doubt smaller venues add better to the atmosphere but the larger venue is no excuse for the game between Sars & Rockies last Sunday. Under Fergal Ryan Rockies were a decent team and won a county title playing to their strengths but under Mulqueen and Harrington they're trying to play a tippy tappy style that is alien to them and yet if Alan Connolly started they probably would have won the match which doesn't say much for Sars.
