A female cyclist has died following a road traffic incident involving a truck in Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, on Wednesday morning.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the crash at the junction of the Glenageary Road Upper, Mountown Road Lower and Kill Avenue in Dún Laoghaire.

The incident involving the truck and bicycle occurred at about 8am on Wednesday morning, according to a statement from gardaí.

“The cyclist, a woman in her 20s, was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where she later passed away from her injuries,” An Garda Síochána said in a statement.

I have absolutely no idea what happened, but this junction is a classic example of the "paint is not cycle infrastructure" maxim. There is zero separation of cyclists from traffic.

And what is it you expect the authorities to do, and to what end? We've seen time and again that many cyclists avoid using designated physically separated cycle lanes. What solution do you suggest?

They tried one in Dublin, but with their own adaptation.

If it's not clear what the problem is, basically, bikes are given a green light, but cars are given a flashing amber, enabling them to drive through the junction when not expected and are not yielding to cyclists.

Sorry but that makes no sense to me.

When separate cycle lanes (rather than just painted ones) are provided, do you think it should be mandatory for cyclists on the roadways where they are provided, to actually use them? If you think it should be obligatory then fine. If not, then alas insisting that physically separate cycle lanes be provided in the wake of such tragedies, without any stipulation that they actually be used if and when they are provided, rings a bit hollow I'm afraid.

Only if it's compulsory that people use N and M roads, when provided, between routes. If you're going to make shit laws for cyclists, you might as well make shit laws for drivers too.

Interesting how the perception of cyclists has not changed over that time.

There is a law already for those M roads you mentioned, they are motorways and cyclists are not allowed on them.

It seems a shame that the common sense of one's own self safety comes second to egos and likes by the likes of the chicken man.
