The right to a fair trial is a constitutional one, so it wouldn't be easy to abolish legal aid.

Also, a big issue with removing it or limiting it is that it leaves defendants very vulnerable to garda corruption. If you can't mount a defence then the guards can pretty much say and do what they like to get a conviction. You might think that is fair enough for "scum", but that has implications for every citizen.

As ive said before, criminal legal aid would be far cheaper and more effective if there was a public defenders office.
