The Official Lenient Sentence Thread

I don't think Huw Edwards was ever going to get a life sentence.
No one ever claimed he would.
They've given early release to violent offenders to make way for the new influx of prisoners - who are only 'violent' online
No. They've given early release to prisoners to help deal with prison overcrowding.
Twitter is akin to graffiti on a toilet wall and Facebook is like listening to drunks down the pub.
Given the serious global problems being caused by disinformation and misinformation, it clearly isn't.
In Jail for Domestic Abuse. Released early and went around and assaulted his victim
Some people who are released from prison will reoffend. Unless we keep all prisoners in jail for the rest of their natural life, there will always be a reoffence rate. I'm not a fan of early release, but to pretend that it's the reason for re offending is just silly.
A society that views opinions as more dangerous than actions is flawed
No one was jailed in the UK for having an opinion.

Some guy got 4 months for not paying his mini bar bill in the Dean, and another fella got ten months for not paying his bill in Inchydoney Beach hotel.
Guys in England got 9 years for Facebook posts, meanwhile we have the likes of Huw Edwards, Tim Allen and all the other nonces getting suspended sentences lol.

Fuck the justice system lol.

Dean guy has multiple previous convictions, ran up a bill of nearly 500 Euros and refused to pay it. Some context wouldn't go amiss.

No one ever claimed he would.
So why bring murderers and rapists into it

No. They've given early release to prisoners to help deal with prison overcrowding.
And make space for all the extra inmates who've posted bad things on the Net
Given the serious global problems being caused by disinformation and misinformation, it clearly isn't.
In the UK the Act has a definition like 'likely to cause offence to a reasonably minded person'
They have the Police trawling FBook & X trying to find posts that fit the criteria.
So you can get arrested even though you haven't offended anyone.

I find Pineapple on Pizza offensive, and I've a friend who finds Rugby in SuperValu Park offensive. We probably could demonstrate that we are reasonably minded. I want the guy who shared a buy-one get-one free flyer on FBook arrested. My mate wants TG4 arrested for showing Munster playing in the Park.

They brought in the early releases to free up spaces for the keyboard warriors.

If you know beating up someone will get you 18 months it might be a deterrent, factor in automatic 60% remission (or fully suspended) you may not think it's much of a deterrent
No one was jailed in the UK for having an opinion.
They certainly did

"I think that Mosque should be blown up"

15 months - looks like an opinion to me

So why bring murderers and rapists into it

A society that views opinions as more dangerous than actions is flawed
If you post on a social media site etc then you are publishing your views to potential huge audiences (Which is why racists and conspiracy theory nutters do it in the first place).

Just like in a daily newspaper.

Your toilet wall graffiti is only visible the the people that visit the toilet and anonymous.

The people you hear in a pub saying all sorts after a few drinks is just hearsay.

So why bring murderers and rapists into it
It was sarcasm...
And make space for all the extra inmates who've posted bad things on the Net
Not a big number of people, despite the hyperbole. Also not the reason for it. You've just decided that there must be a connection.

That's not how the legal definition of offensive works.

You've decided that, based only on mistaking corelation for causation.
If you know beating up someone will get you 18 months it might be a deterrent, factor in automatic 60% remission (or fully suspended) you may not think it's much of a deterrent
Have you ever read research into prison sentrnve length as a deterrent?
They certainly did

"I think that Mosque should be blown up"

That's not an opinion, that's incitement to hatred. Those are very different things and are policed accordingly.
