How come.?

Because the money isn't theirs! It is (in all likelihood) the proceeds of crime and will be seized by the state as part of the case.

If they can somehow prove that it is their money then the legal aid order can be reversed. It's highly unlikely though.

It would be like someone being arrested for shoplifting and suggesting they pay with the products they stole!
