the official betting thread.

No, I know what you're saying, but they'll say that giving customers autonomy over what marketing they receive mitigates the safer gambling angle.
I receive marketing. I'm well able to ignore any marketing I don't want though, such as bets on American football, Cricket whatever and use the stuff I like. I think they're are people who will be harmed by this though, and the bookies probably have the tools to figure out which sports their customers like and market those to them. It's not an anti marketing thing, it's trying to squeeze more and more from punters who MAY be vulnerable while claiming to be watching out for problem gamblers that is my gripe
It's also likely that the UKGC put an onus on gambling sites to be very careful how they market to UK based customers they deem potential problem gamblers. They can maybe play a bit more fast and loose with Irish customers as they aren't under that jurisdiction. So, it's quite possible that middle of the road punters, such as yourself (I assume!), will be free to be bombarded by marketing if you don't have your opt-in button switched to off.
I hadn't considered this tbh.

Yeah, I'd say marketing is tailored to the customer's profile. If you're not hitting their radar as a likely problem gambler, they'll lob everything they can at you.

I'm sure only a short time ago, everybody would have been in the same boat, in fact, problem gamblers would have got hit with every freebie and marketing ploy under the sun but I know that that was clamped down on in the last couple of years.

Fair enough.

Out of interest though, what would likely show up on their radar as a problem gambler? I mean I know a few people who would have a lot of bets over a week/month, but they're fully in control, while some other poor saps would bet on a few days a week/month because they're broke.

And then you have the guy who can lose a grand a month and it's be pocket money, while another guy losing 100 quid a week would put serious strain on them.

It must be a minefield come to think of it.

I'd imagine erratic behaviour would easily be picked up: wild staking fluctuation (chasing!), sudden spikes in depositing after losing, betting on all sorts and at all hours of the day and night. I think we can take it for granted that the betting companies have all the tech to automatically flag these kinds of traits very easily.

You can be sure they also know who their high-rollers are, once source of funds checks are done.

Yeah, I remember the fella who wrote the book* doing a lot of that alright.

*I'm sure you know the one. Name escapes me!

Gravenberch crd 11/2. 2 from 4 games this season so far

Got booked v Brentford from just two fouls, and just one against Forest on Saturday. Who scored have his weaknesses as tackles, but also say he does not dive into tackles!

Still, 11/2 is a good price for a defensive mid with a 50% strike rate this season imo.
