The Official Athletics Thread

Yeah i agree about the coverage. No studio gave loads of prominance to Field events..I'm a hoor for fowarding past them but they tend to be box office at champs.. i like the world field commentators. Tim Huchings and Hannah England moreso than Rob Walker. yer wan Tamsin was good didnt get her full name. Sonia did a great job on the Marathons I thought. I dont know who the yank long jump guy was but he was excellent too. i thought Will Dalton got a nice bit from his interviews and had done some homework. It was weird but welcome that RTE sent Gillick and Eamon Horan plus camera crew too.

Zurich Diamond League tonight

200m Mens is basically a run back from worlds

Sha'Carri and Sherica are running but in different races

1500m mens the same except no Jacob. Josh Kerr only has 6 points so needs a 4th or better to make the DL Final. Coscoran has a lane

5000m Fay is running. As is Grant Fisher. Woody and the Ethopians. This is a good race for Brian

Remaining DLs for the year
1st Sept Xiamen China
8th Sept Brussels
16th Pre Classic - DL Final

Then world road race champs in Riga on 30th Sept. these used to be the World Half marathon champs but they're including 1500m and 5k too. No idea who is running but i hope some of the Irish athletes target them

A 1500 road race? Makes no fooking sense. HM and say 10k or 15k maybe, but 1500???
its actually a mile. I think they're pushing the mass partcipation side of it.

the're running the champs in downtown Riga so you get all the tour de france style drone shots and then the have a go hero get to flake around and believe they cudda been a contender.

its not a bad idea but i guess it'll hinge on how seriously the athletes take it

Road race championships are a big deal C. They even have Cork, Mnuster and all-Ireland versions. They're not 1500 metres, I'll grant you (usually 4-milers) but there's a long tradition of mile and 1500m races on the road. East Antrim run one, there's the Griffith Avenue mile and further afield, the 5th Aveue mile is legendary. I remember tuning in for this one back in the day

Then there's Mike Boit's "assisted" 3:26

Feck, I've a busy evening this evening but will try to find a stream somewhere.

World HM is all on its own nowadays - usually a mass participation event. smurf, from this parish, ran it in Cardiff a few years ago (2016?), the year Kipsang fell badly at the start and still got up to catch the field and win the race. I dunno where it was run this year but it's doubling up with the Copenhagen HM in 2025 AFAIK.

Lads, lads, I know there are a few Mile Road Races like. I didn't come down in the last shower, but my point is, the 1500 (even the mile) is a track race, ffs. They have just run it in the WC (and a great one about two minutes ago in Zurich). Don't know why they need to invent one for Road races. Christ, do a 5 mile road race, a 10 mile or 15k one, but don't be bothering us with a classic track distance.

Zurich 'interesting' so far. Few unsurprising surprises, given hangovers from the Worlds.
