The Hurling Thread

3 keepers .shane dowling, conor Hanley clarke young kilmallock keeper and jason gillane of the well.
It's better find out in training and the league than first round of championship and I'd say they will all get a chance in nickys absence
I don't think that I have seen him play in goal much tbh.

I'd imagine just from his outfield playing days that his puckouts could be extremely good but that's just a assumption really.

My take from this would be Keily is possibly not very confident in the other options (I thought Gillane was decent enough in Fitz) or maybe he feels Quaid provides a lot of leadership that's hard to replicate with the "regular" #2 keeper.

I'd say Hanley clarke in with a shout from what I've seen but that's limited as I don't get home so much these days. Downling good shot stopper ,great long puck but I wouldn't say he has agility of nicky in goal. Takes some long range frees for nap but I'd expect byrnes to be still on those. Gillane a decent goalie too but no doubt nicky is a huge loss to team and the way the backs operate as a whole .

His puckouts and long range free taking are very good.

I think finding goalkeepers to take long puckouts and frees is probably not that difficult.

I think it may be the organisational skill of Quaid with his backs which may be missed as well as the quality of passes out from goal both loan and short. His level of accuracy was very high and his decision making when deciding which player to hit was also very high. Limerick in most games were presented with good opportunities as a result of passes coming from the keeper.

I think Dowling will be given a chance because of his experience in playing at the highest level and it may be hoped that this experience may help him to closely replicate what Quaid would do.

Time will tell on that.

I do believe that Quaid above all other players is the one Kiely would not want to lose.
Outfield players can have poor games and others can compensate for that on a given day but not so much with a keeper.

It is no coincidence that the improvement from Cork is in no small part due to the improved displays of Patrick Collins.

Some big hurling games this weekend. Hard to see past ballygunner tomorrow although hopefully it's a competitive game. SARS do have legs up front and age is against a few of the gunners backs.
The leinster final tonight should be a cracker. Both teams will relish the open spaces of croke park instead of playing on tilled fields of provincial grounds. Cillian kiely got a bang on his finger last week and if he's out it's very much advantage na fianna.
Cashel watergrasshill tonight looks a 50 /50 game as does rathnure and lisdowney in the leinster intermidiate final tomorrow

Very good performance by na fianna last night against a very young kilcormac team who will be regulars at this stage in the future you'd think. Screeney showed his class even in defeat, but na fianna are a well balanced physically strong team with the star quality of donal Burke and aj Murphy

Very well coached for a Dublin team, not the usual collection of athletes and agricultural hurlers you find with Dublin teams so they certainly have a shot at the all Ireland in fairness to them
