The Hurling Thread

The Davy Fitz years I presume
Not sure, but I'm also not sure about the rumours about Davy getting the big bobs that are talked about. I have a good friend from Waterford that was involved in WCB, and he said he nearly bankrupted them the first time in 09. But it wasn't any like big money he was getting, he was claiming expenses alright but it was more related to team expenses, the best of every thing, weekends away etc. I remember one Summer meeting them three times in Castlemathyr Resort, which wasn't cheap.

Liam Cahill named his Tipp Senior hurling panel for 2025. A massive overhaul. 20 players out and 20 new players in. Some big omissions include Cathal Barrett, Mark Kehoe, Ger Browne, Paddy Cadell and Ciarán Connolly. Also throw in the retirements of Bonner Maher, Niall O Meara and Dan McCormack. Plenty of youth thrown in. Some brilliant Under 20s such as Darragh McCarthy, Sam O' Farrell and Oisín O' Donoghue are called up. I think Tipp hurling needed this overhaul so it will be interesting to see how they get on.

They’ll be no soft touch next year you can be sure.

I dunno about that, to be honest even Tipp folk are expecting zero. I think we might be looking at the weakest Tipp panel in decades
They’ll have a lot of lads who’ve won a lot at minor and U20. Very unlikely to win anything next year but I don’t see them losing all of their matches either.

Kehoe is a weird one - very talented attacker with a proven ability to put up a score in championship hurling.

Cahill got away with murder this summer - after plenty promising performances in '23 they were so shockingly poor in '24, worse than anything his predecessor had resided over.

Worth giving kudos to Bonner Maher lads - a legend of a player, a great example to young lads (and young coaches also!) that you don't need to be able to strike a ball over from the sideline 70m out from goal on your back foot... you can be brilliant at making life really difficult for the opposition and play at the very highest level. Every team needs a blend of scorers with lads that will just go through a wall for you. He didn't put up much of a score typically but Patrick Maher broke teams with fielding, hard running, tackling. His striking was poor but so was Brick Walsh's. Bonner was lethal on a loose ball I will say, never broke stride, excellent picking technique in traffic.
