The team capable of actually scoring won the game. Some of Mayo's finishing and composure in attack was atrocious.

Have to say though, it is fucking ridiculous that Derry are go into a QF after losing 2 games, winning 1 game against Westmeath, and winning 1 penalty shoutout, ahead of Mayo who won 2 games, drew 1 game against Dublin, and lost 1 penalty shootout.

Format is an absolute joke, to be out of the championship on a penalty shootout to a team that has won 1 out of 5 games is diabolical. Crowds very disappointing today as well considering it’s knock out.

Mayo bottled it against Dublin, had a quarter final spot in their hands and threw it away...same today couldnt close it out when they had the game for the taking...its not Derry's fault that the structures are the way they are but they seem to have turned the corner on their form..

Agreed it's not their fault, it just goes to show how little value the group stage actually has, and how little it actually rewards and punishes teams. Mayo would have been better off resting their first 15 last week to keep them fresh for today and and then face into a QF having played just 1 game in 2 weeks rather than 2.

It's something that Louth could/should definitely have considered against Kerry, and it's something I think more teams will chance their arm at next year if it stays as is. If you think that sound mad, just look at how rugby teams do in the European Cup and URC.

Derry do look like they've recovered, but they could be easy pickings depending on their draw for next week with how much had to go into today and last week.

I wouldn’t say Derry have turned a corner but that was a big win for them. Mayo were the perfect opponent for them though. Took the pressure right off them and all of it was on Mayo, at home, a week after celebrating a draw with Dublin. Perfect situation for Derry and they used that to their advantage IMO.

They’ll face Dublin, Kerry or Donegal next and the first two there will beat them but again, the pressure will be completely off them. They’re a dangerous opponent for anyone in that scenario.

The system does need addressing though. Two upsets today in terms of bookies odds anyway. Hopefully not another tomorrow.

Format needs tweaking certainly (Top 2 from each group into QF, extra week between end of groups and knockout, and that's just for starters) but this format was designed to get through Congress - no more, no less.

Same with Tailteann Cup semis being a standalone fixture. Again, a sweetener for Congress delegates to ensure it passed.

I saw Oisin McConville saying that inter-county championship will eventually be graded like every single other championship run in the GAA family. Why this hasn't happened already is mind boggling. It makes complete sense to tier your primary competitions to make sure teams play other teams of equal standing.

And then perhaps they can get to grips with the scheduling and broadcasting arrangements, and maybe, y'know, come into the 21st century with regards to engaging supporters on non-traditional media.

the gaa are a fucking joke shop of an organisation when it comes to organising their competitions.

“hmmm…..we have 32 teams playing in a perpetual competition. how could we structure this to be the fairest or best way possible?”

it’s been the best part of four years since i’ve watched a game of football. it’s absolutely dire. stadia two thirds empty until the semi finals and the bus parked hard for every match.

someone was on in a soccer thread about how pep ball has sort of ruined soccer and coached the individaul brilliance out of teams. mcguinness and dublin have done similar.

there was a sweet spot there from around 1990 to 2011 when football was a free flowing team sport. halfway between hand passing the ball into the goals and just stacking the defence.

I
WTF is going on with gaa. Wedging 5 matches into a Saturday afternoon( + AI minor semi final) in order to facilitate a secondary competition that very few will watch tomorrow. It's suicidal stuff.
Disagree. I think it's great that they're showing the secondary matches. But they should also be showing Cork v Louth.
They didn't show any of the other matches at this stage though. So it's within keeping with whatever their ethos is.
As wrong as that ethos is.
It's a gaago push. I still refuse to pay for it on principle
