The Conor McGregor Thread

Getting nominated to run for President is tricky
20 TDs or Senators need to nominate you. Or 4 local councils.

Where are his nominations coming from 🤷‍♂️

Muslims are doing what ?

The President is our head of state fella. He has no role to play in government policy. As I understand it, his role is to make sure any laws passed by the government are constitutional and if they are, sign off on them. I'm not exactly sure what happens when they're not, but I'm assuming he or some other well paid civil servant (possibly the Attorney General explains the why to the legislatitor).

He's also the head of the armed forces and greets dignitaries in the Aras and makes them tea.

I'd say Michael D is well capable of performing this role, especially with his background in law.

Unless I'm missing something. Do tell if I am.
I have never understood that role of the Presidentncy. If something happens that warrants the intervention of the armed forces, surely it's the government of the day that makes that decision - not the president.
Can someone explain it to me?

Again the again his role there is ceremonial. The Minister for Defence has ultimate operational control even if that's ultimately delegated to a few Generals.

Presidents primary function legislative scrutiny. He or she can refer legislation to the supreme court for a ruling on whether it is consutitional but seldom does because to do so means nobody else can challange the legislation. I think it's only happened once on the history of the state

He or she can also call for a sitting of the council ot state to review legislation but I don't think they have any formal powers and would recommend to the president what to actually do (i.e. refer to the supreme court or not)

Edit: There have been about 15 referrals since the foundation of the state most recently the judicial appointments bill

The council of state met 29 times at the time this was published

El Guapo answered it well. I'd also imagine it's some sort of checks and balances, so that one particular arm of the government never has too much power.

Not sure how likely it is to work, but hopefully life never gets so bad that we have to find out.

I am well aware of the President's role is scrutinising legislation & his power to refer it to the Council of State and from there, the legislation can be referred to the Supreme Court to test its constitutionality.

He has the title of head of the armed forces - but he has nothing to do with them - maybe attends a few parades or something like that.

It just looks silly to me, to be described as the "head" but, in practice, he appears to have no role whatsoever in the armed forces.

It's a consutitional copy and paste job.

A ball of countries do it.

I guess who wants a president meeting another president at a president's convention and one has a cool uniform with a pile of medals and shit and a military attaché and yours doesn't
