I'm not sure that your current age is making you feel useless, but I am reminded of a Japanese expression that Japanese women use for their retired husbands. They call them sodai-gomi.

Sodai-gomi in Japan refers to garbage that is too large to be tossed out with the regular garbage; things like refrigerators.
