Russia's unjustifiable war of aggression in Ukraine

Afghanistan - totally different terrain to Ukraine. Afghanistan is almost totally mountainous - Ukraine is almost totally flat.

Lots of places for clusters of soldiers to safely hide in Afghanistan - made for effective guerrilla warfare.

Set piece battles can't be avoided in Ukraine's flat plains. If the Russians have 10 times the number of troops & 7 times the artillery / heavy weaponry, there can be only one winner.

It's hard to understand the mentality of the Republicans in Congress - consigning the Ukrainians to inevitable defeat. Insanity.

If Russia has the resources to open up a second front from the North again, via Belarus - the show will be over by the end of the Summer.
Certainly the republicans must share some blame for their actions of lack of, but I think the major issue is a structural one.

At the beginning of the war many western countries donates their excess arms but are/were unwilling to go below what they deem to be their minimum requirement for their own defense.

If you look at defense companies most of their share prices have gone through the roof on expectations of increased production yet so far production increases have not really happened to any great extent. One of the reasons is despite their posturing and pontificating western governments have simply not increased orders.

So lets suppose you are Rhinemettal in Germany (there is talk of them building one in Ukraine) will you build new factories when potentially these orders may not come or possibly the war won't last as long as you expect to justify a new plant, i.e what do you do with it if the war stopped tomorrow?

Also most of these companies have order books stretching to 5 years therefore to meet any new demand would require new plants and currently they have not been given guarantees that would justify this, so we are reaching a stage whereby there are no surplus weapons to give, and none in the pipeline and that is down to the lack of action or planning by western countries. Also to ramp up production won't happen overnight so they more they prevaricate the more they are playing into Russian hands.

Contrast this with Russia who is now on a war time footing whereby resources and people are being diverted to go into the war effort, and it is not too difficult to see why the tide has been changing of late.

When Russian soldiers entered Chornobyl’s exclusion zone, 85-year-old Valentyna Kukharenko, one of the few residents who lives here, wrote a message on a piece of paper and stuck it to her window for the invaders to see.

She wrote that she lost her childhood to the Second World War, her motherhood to Chornobyl’s nuclear disaster, and her elderly years to Russia’s occupation.

“As soon as we found out that they attacked our Chornobyl, I wrote this,” she said, sitting at her kitchen table. “I thought that maybe one of them would come up and respect how they act,” she added, but as far as she knows, no one read it.

here is the rest of the report:

It wasn't that long ago we were told sanctions were crippling Russia and they could even force Putin's inner circle to revolt.

Now this 😕 🤷‍♂️

A war economy that is killing the young who have not emigrated and the old skills will be dying out and retiring with billions spent on munitions etc while the country falls apart.

Totally unsustainable.

Has their decent economy anything to do with oil and gas exports which seem to be circumventing sanctions? Third parties are reportedly buying them and selling them to western nations under the pretence of not being Russian.

That is also unsustainable as they are selling energy off at cost/loss to India/China etc while Ukraine is attacking their energy infrastructure and they are dependent on western tech and parts.

Imagine losing wealthy Europe as a customer for your only major export?

Also helping the huge pivot to renewables.
