He only delivers paper thin characterisation tbh so you dont care what happens to any of them.

Oh look they killed his dad who we barely know so that means nothing to us.

I mean in almost six hours of screentime you have a main character who you're not really invested in. That's shoddy storytelling imo.

That was it exactly. There's a lot that can be done in a short amount of time to establish dynamics and hint at depth, but Villeneuve didn't seem interested in doing that at all. When the doctor betrays them to the Harkonnens, it fell completely flat too. No time was spent on him at all, so his betrayal had zero impact.

As awkward as it comes across nowadays, Lynch's decision to have some characters' thoughts dubbed in works miles better than not even trying to characterise them.

Tbh, I think Villeneuve has the makings of a great music video director. Film seems a stretch for him.

I read Dune more then 20 years ago.
As I remember it's a very complicated story with a shit ton of internal dialogue. Very difficult to translate that to film and if you did it's no surprise that the end result would feel a bit sterile.

I enjoyed the first film. I thought it was as good as it could be. However I think a knowledge of the book and maybe even a deep love of the book was a prerequisite to enjoy the film.
I don't think it can stand alone and be enjoyed.

I remember thinking that in the cinema. "How are people who never read the book going to really get what's going on?"

I just dont think Villeneuve can do characterisation.
I mean Arrival looked great but the aliens seemed more relatable than the main characters.

I thought Sicario was a right pile of shite, girl boss nonsense.

Critics seem to adore his movies but he cant connect with an audience. Bladerunner TNG was a complete bomb.
Same problems.

I really wanted to like Dune2: Electric Boogaloo but it was just so much spectacle and very little substance.

Austin Butler is a star in the making, did way more than Shamamamamalay with basically nothing to work with.
