Pubs reopening June 29th

Heineken got fierce grief about a year or two ago about upping their prices. Your man in Counihans had note up in front of taps asking customers to consider another brand.
Diageo seem to push these increases through with just a few low level grumbles when they move first.
Irish market a bit of a cash cow for Diageo. Their share price has tanked in a rising market in recent times and Irish/UK on-trade sector one of the few bright spots for them.
One of their big private-equity shareholders flogged his full holding in the company last week.
I’ve a feeling this time may be different for Diageo ,they will lose ground

I'd say Guinness is already losing ground in Cork as Beamish is just so popular, and cheaper.

The trend of younger people drinking Guinness is different in Cork, in Cork younger people are turning to Beamish and they're loyal to it.

Beamish a far more consistent pint in Cork than Guinness IMO. I find the quality of Guinness in Cork to be generally quite disappointing.

My local got that letter too, they're devastated. I met the owner earlier and she said they're really trying to see if they can get away without increasing their prices.

They're lucky as they're currently at €5.80 so have a bit of breathing space between there and the dreaded €6.

She said if they do put the prices up, it'll be 10c.

€5.90, still one of the cheapest pints in town.

Diageo are awful cunts.
€5.00 in my two locals for Guinness and Murphys, they agree to sell drink at the same price.

i didn't think we'd still be at €5.00 for a pint in our local, it went from early 4's to €5 fairly quickly but in fairness they haven't increased it now i'd say in nearly two years roughly

Usually when this happens there are calls from VFI members to take Diageo products out of their pubs.

Could this be the time? This is going to send a lot of Cork pubs north of €6 a pint, and fuck knows what a pint will cost in Dublin.

Rather than lose customers who will no longer come in, will pubs now start to push cheaper alternatives, so they can lose Guinness but not lose their Guinness drinkers?

Nice to see that not all breweries are greedy pricks. Hopefully this stuff will be available in Cork at some stage.

And plans for that to happen Benny?

Changing Times Brewery, the new brewery backed by some of the best known publican families in Dublin, has confirmed they will not be increasing their prices in 2025.

“We might be known as Changing Times, but one thing that won’t be changing this year is our prices, unlike some others in the market,” said Ronan Lynch of the Swan, one of Changing Times Brewery’s founding publicans. “We thought it was important to make that clear, so that our customers know they will be paying the same prices today and tomorrow as they did when we launched last November. Being a locally produced, Irish brewery we know how disappointing people find regular price increases from some of the major operators. So at the start of 2025, we wanted to give this firm commitment to anyone trying our refreshing beers.”

Based along the banks of the Royal Canal, Changing Times Brewery launched in November with two initial products, Daydreamer Lager and After Hours Pale Ale. A new stout product is also expected to be launched in the coming weeks.

The brewery is backed by brewer Shane Long, publican Benny McCabe, drinks’ industry entrepreneur and founder of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin, Patrick J. Rigney and the publican families behind The Ferryman, The Palace, The Long Hall, The Swan, Darkey Kellys, The Bankers, Arthur Maynes in Donnybrook, Devitts, Doheny & Nesbitts, Sheehans, Lemon & Duke, The Bridge 1859, The Blackrock, The Bank and McSorleys.
