Pubs reopening June 29th

Nice to see that not all breweries are greedy pricks. Hopefully this stuff will be available in Cork at some stage.

And plans for that to happen Benny?

Changing Times Brewery, the new brewery backed by some of the best known publican families in Dublin, has confirmed they will not be increasing their prices in 2025.

“We might be known as Changing Times, but one thing that won’t be changing this year is our prices, unlike some others in the market,” said Ronan Lynch of the Swan, one of Changing Times Brewery’s founding publicans. “We thought it was important to make that clear, so that our customers know they will be paying the same prices today and tomorrow as they did when we launched last November. Being a locally produced, Irish brewery we know how disappointing people find regular price increases from some of the major operators. So at the start of 2025, we wanted to give this firm commitment to anyone trying our refreshing beers.”

Based along the banks of the Royal Canal, Changing Times Brewery launched in November with two initial products, Daydreamer Lager and After Hours Pale Ale. A new stout product is also expected to be launched in the coming weeks.

The brewery is backed by brewer Shane Long, publican Benny McCabe, drinks’ industry entrepreneur and founder of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin, Patrick J. Rigney and the publican families behind The Ferryman, The Palace, The Long Hall, The Swan, Darkey Kellys, The Bankers, Arthur Maynes in Donnybrook, Devitts, Doheny & Nesbitts, Sheehans, Lemon & Duke, The Bridge 1859, The Blackrock, The Bank and McSorleys.

I'd say Guinness is already losing ground in Cork as Beamish is just so popular, and cheaper.

The trend of younger people drinking Guinness is different in Cork, in Cork younger people are turning to Beamish and they're loyal to it.

Beamish a far more consistent pint in Cork than Guinness IMO. I find the quality of Guinness in Cork to be generally quite disappointing.

The worst thing about being a Guinness drinker is you never know what you are going to get. Anything from slop to Nirvana if you risk going to a pub you haven't been in before.

The owner of the pub with the best pint of Guinness in Ireland told me it is all down to glass hygiene/management. Apparently, contamination with detergent, furniture polish and other chemicals is the main cause. For example, washing dish/furniture cloths in the same sink/machine as the glasses can ruin an otherwise perfect pint. The day that publican left, the Guinness in the same pub became undrinkable.

Hopefully soon Moe , We are still running out the taps in the founding pubs in Dublin , I would hope to have some of it by March , The stout was rolled out this week ,feed back is good , I think Diageo have gone one step too far this time ,even the way it’s being spun by them is mad , It’s a minimum 20 c on guinness in two weeks ,plus we have wages and auto enrollment coming which is another 20 c min and Diageo have flagged that there will be another increase soon , It’s absolutely crazy ,and I can tell you being involved it’s totally unjustifiable, Small breweries have no where near the economy of scale that these guys have and they are not putting up prices , If Heineken were clever they would hold their prices Ask your self would you pay 30 c over the odds to a plc to help shore up shareholder value and help fund a pension fund deficit or world you instead go for award winning local beer like most , This is what it will begin to look like in two weeks time . I think it’s going to be a great time for independent brewing

Had a pint in Hickey's of Aherla while watching the United game there.

Have to say I was very disappointed in their decorations. Usually they go all out but there were just a few lights up this year.

Lovely pint as always though, €5.40, and very friendly and attentive young staff. There was a good crowd of stragglers still around from the Poc Fáda earlier.

Lovely letter from Diageo today upping Thur prices ,this is a 15c rise across all their pints and 20 c on “00” this will be on top of raises by the pubs re wages and auto enrolement ,
You can try and absorb these costs and bleed out over a year and have nice things said about you on Cork beo after you have lost your livelihood or you must put them up and hope you are still there in a few years,
I wonder will Heineken follow suit

I was in a pub* over in that London a few weeks ago. The owner arrived in, he was handed some letters as he got behind the bar and I couldn't help but overhear/eavesdrop;

"Bet it's from the brewery. Yep. As you VAT returns have exceeded £X your new rates bill will be £6200, increasing from 2024's £2400... So because I've made a go of this place, Shepherd's Neame are going to punish me?!"

I ordered a second pint there and then before it went up from the £7 I'd paid for the first one.

Does this happen here? I know that there aren't tied houses really but do corporation rates increase based on your turnover?

* The Prince Arthur - A very decent boozer in Shoreditch - I do recommend it. Second only to The Griffin in that parish.

The tied estate is impossible to make money in . Low rent if you buy from them , to exit the tie a rent can double . Either way the tennant is caught

They also should be doing some serious marketing for Beamish and expanding it's reach around the country.
