Northern Ireland Elections 2017

From all reports the protocol is working and businesses up there are happy, any party with a good strategy would take the view that
by going into government and watch while the economy improves will mean people are happy and would dilute any calls for a BP,
But the DUP are far from normal.

The DUP were reared on a diet of "Never! Never! Never!" and it is anathema to them that Sinn Féin would have a First Minister be treated as, or even considered a viable political party.

It is bonkers, surely if they want to protect the union, they should just suck it up?

This is all to help Boris distract from 100 party gate fines and a poor local election etc and the D.U.P. are willing patsies to be used again.

The U.K. did not scrap their trade deal in December 2020 for the D.U.P. so why would they do it in 2022?

There are 2 things going on here.
The ERG are using it to push for their pure Brexit.
The UVF have painted SJD into a corner with the rallies and while he used to say this

Now he has to play hardball or walk into an assembly as DFM which he won't countenance.

But there is also another element - this notion that everything in NI has to have cross community consent.
Brexit didn't, it happened anyway. WA and NIP didn't, happened anyway. Now the narrative seems to be everything must have cross community consent irrespective of whether it is devolved or not. The implication is obvious, a BP would need cross community consent and therefore can never happen. That is the foundation that is being laid down here - a unionist veto by another means.

The ERG are deluded as it would destroy the U.K. economy even further now and they had their chance and now is not the time for their scorched earth Brexit.

S.F. also brought down Stormont and consent came into play and a border poll will not be in the remit of this Government anyway and it is all laid down in the G.F.A. and the D.U.P. will just continue to be willing victims of the Tories and their own political stupidity.

For all the rhetoric and bluster (their Greatest Hits), The D.U.P., Boris Johnson & the Brexiteers still have no realistic answer to the 'Northern Ireland border' question.

The Tories are now just English Nationalists and everything else is just collateral damage but someone please tell Jeffrey Donaldson.

Part of me is fearful that what they'll try do is set up a UK wide trade including the north and still have no borders and then it'll become incumbent on the Irish Govt and/or The EU to impose customs checks at the border to stop the unfettered flow of GB (as distinct from the north of Ireland) produce into the EU via Ireland. And if Ireland doesn't impose checks there our access to the single market could be subjected to checks at the European mainland ports

We'd become meat in the warring sandwich between the UK and the EU and suffer as a result of something we'd no hand, act, or part in voting for - namely Brexit. They've p*ssed on us for centuries when it came to self-interest. They're not going to stop now. And the loyalists are trying to portray being treated as equals to nationalists as being victimised.

This is all to distract from Partygate, Russian money and the massive cost of living crisis and they need to blame someone so it might as well be the E.U. as a distraction.

The E.U. will never sacrifice a member for a non-member and remember the U.S.A. etc are watching.

The D.U.P. backed Brexit and they dismissed all the warnings and their chlorinated chickens have come home to roost.
