Agreed. Cork having lost the previous two AI finals to KK there was a lot of hurt and expectation amongst the travelling support and "sleeping giant" Tipp looked to be awakening from their slumber, especially as Thurles was going to host the Centenary All Ireland Final. Match ebbed and flowed and it was in the balance going down the straight but Cork eventually pulled away - thanks to a late Seanie Leary goal after the Tipp Keeper batted the ball down to stop it going over for a point.
Ironically enough the programme that day Babs Keating said that he fancied Tipp because Cork had a lot of old players coming to the end and the likes of Seanie O'Leary (fairly sure he even named him) mightn't last the pace.
Think the "Donkey's Don't Win Derbies" 1990 Munster Final where Babs shot his mouth off again was another absolute gem of a game. Mark Foley scoring 2-7 from play in a Munster Final. Nip and tuck for a while but we had too much for them. And of course 1990 All Ireland, very open game.
Fond memories of 1986 too when Johnny Crowley stood in splendid isolation (Cyril Farrell was using the two man full-forward line that shocked Kilkenny in the Semi) for the first 10 minutes and cleared five points down to our forwards - Galway realised their ruse hadn't worked and were playing catch up after that. The Mayor of Galway in the build up when interviewed by RTE said he hoped Cork would give Galway a good game.
The victory speech in town afterwards was a classic. "To the Mayor of Galway - look at this"
