Foreign secretary taken to task by worshipper who spoke of the alcoholism in her family during visit to a gurdwara in Bristol

Seemingly unaware that the drinking of alcohol is forbidden under some Sikh teachings, he told the crowd that he was going to sign a free trade deal in order to boost the trade in whisky.
âI hope Iâm not embarrassing anybody here by saying that when we go to India, we have to bring âclinkyâ in our luggage,â he said. âWe have to bring Johnnie Walker.â
âThere is a duty of 150% in India on imports of Scottish whisky. So we have to bring it in for our relatives duty free. Imagine what we could do with a trade deal with India, which there will be, because then the tariffs would go.â
His words provoked an angry response from some members of the crowd, with one women, named as Balbir Kaur, particularly vocal in her criticism. âHow dare you talk about alcohol in a Sikh temple?â she said. âYou are standing in a Sikh [temple] talking about alcohol, which is absolutely not right.â
The former mayor replied: âIâm very sorry if you think that alcohol is a bad thing â I understand your point of view. It is not, though, the view of every religion. There are plenty of Sikhs who are good and practising Sikhs who donât take your attitude.
