gardai and judiciary allow kids get raped again.

Thats pretty god-damn revolting.

The justice system spectacularly failed those children.

Tbph, what do you do with serial offenders like this. In this instance this individual was clearly not in any way rehabilitated and worse still he was allowed to occupy a position where he had access to children. Imo repeat offenders like this clearly have no place in society as they are only going to harm more children.

The current system of lax sentencing and failing to monitor these individuals after they have served their sentence is clearly deeply flawed. This fella clearly needed to be strictly monitored. As it stands he has done irreparable damage to several young lives and should NEVER be allowed to do so again.

Also I would have assumed anyone in a position where they work with children would be subject to a Garda background check for previous convictions? Thats the way it it with teachers like.

Some fuck up between the school authorities, the guards and the courts allowed this to happen. Heads should roll.

The court was told the accused had studied for the priesthood in Maynooth from 1974 to 1979 but did not graduate after "a disagreeable event took place which caused him to leave".

Is it inconceivable that he might have been caught doing similar shit during these 5 years and thrown out?

Not to take the savage eye view on Priests either... but there were a disproportionate amount of dirty fuckers active in the priesthood at that time who were never reported by the church.

Just when we thought it couldn't get any worse.

The church will pretend they'd no idea what was going on, but to be fair they hid these bastards for years, even facilitated some of them by moving them to new parishes after each accusation.

Those kids are now roughly the same age as a lot of us on this site, this shouldn't have happened, the likelihood is that he'd family on the board of directors or staff too to get back into the school. They should name the cunt publicly, see how many more people come forward with claims, then check the school to find out why he got in in the first place, never mind the second time. and find out why he got thrown out of the priesthood.

But knowing the Irish Justice system he'll be given 6 years and put on a register that isn't enforced, then they'll stop the media from writing about him.

When offenders arent named, it is to protect the identity of the victim not the perpetrator.

If the victim choses to waive their right to not be identified then the offender will be named.

Mattie -> Which year was the Sex Offenders Register established? If it was after the earlier crimes, would they have been written in retrospectively?

Could they waive that right after they had appeared in court?, ie could they waive it tomorrow?

Do you know if there are any plans to open up the sex offenders register to the public as is done in other countries, with limited details even?

I believe they can waive it at any time.

I dont believe there are any plans to make any changes to the legislation governing the sex offenders register.

jd - Sex Offenders Act came in in 1991 - afaik it is not retrospective.
